Tre Jones's Biography

Tre Isiah Jones, pronounced TRAY, is a well-known figure in the world of professional basketball. Born on the 8th of January, 2000, Jones is currently a player for the San Antonio Spurs, a team in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Following in the footsteps of his older brother, Tyus Jones, who also plays in the NBA, Tre carved his own basketball path.

Growing up in Apple Valley, Minnesota, Tre Jones started his basketball journey at the local high school, taking to the courts for Apple Valley High School. Even as an eighth grader, he had a spot on the varsity team, and by the next season, he was a regular starter. Jones became a crucial player, leading Apple Valley to two Minnesota 4A state titles in 2015 and 2017. In the 2016-17 seasons, he was an indomitable force averaging 23.5 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 7.5 assists. His hard work earned him not only the Minnesota Gatorade Player of the Year title twice but also McDonald’s All-American and Minnesota Mr. Basketball honors after his final year in high school.

Regarded as a 5-star recruit and one of the top point guards in his class of 2018, Jones’ prowess was well-renowned nationwide. On August 13, 2017, Jones accepted an offer to play college basketball for the Duke Blue Devils, where he later became an indispensable part of the team.

His college debut was impressive. During a match with Kentucky at the Champions Classic on November 6, 2018, he scored 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 7 assists helping Duke secure a decisive 118–84 victory. He also led his team to a triumph over Texas Tech, scoring 13 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 6 steals. Despite a shoulder injury during a game against Syracuse in January 2019, which forced him to miss two games, Jones averaged 9.4 points, 5.3 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game during his freshman year, promising an exciting sophomore year.

And Jones lived up to the promise. He remained with Duke for the 2019-20 season, kicking it off with 15 points in their 68-66 victory over Kansas. He managed a career-high 31 points in a game against Georgia State and despite a mild foot injury that saw him missing two games, Jones was named the ACC Player and Defensive Player of the Year. He averaged 16.2 points, 6.4 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game. Following the successful season, he declared himself for the 2020 NBA Draft.

The San Antonio Spurs drafted him in the 41st overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft, and Jones signed with them in November of the same year. His stint in the G League began on February 1, 2021. Later, a memorable moment came when he and his brother Tyus, who plays for the Memphis Grizzlies, had their first triple-doubles in the same month, in 2023. Tre later re-signed with the Spurs.

International representation was also part of his career, with Jones playing for the United States at the 2015 FIBA Americas Under-16 Championship in Argentina. The team won the gold medal, and Jones contributed notably with 19 steals.

On the personal side, basketball seems to be in Jones’ blood, with three older brothers who also had a connection to the sport. Tre’s older brother, Tyus, was a former NCAA champion with Duke and now plays for the Phoenix Suns. His other brother, Jadee, played college basketball for Furman and went on to coach basketball at Apple Valley High School and Minnehaha Academy. Tre also has a half brother, Reggie Bunch, who played at Robert Morris University. His grandfather, Dennis Deutsch, was a part of the United States Armed Forces.

Tre Jones married Maddy Torres in 2023, and they have a daughter. With a blend of family, basketball, and success, Tre’s life overflows with engagement and achievement at every turn.
