Toumani Camara

Toumani Camara, pronounced too-MAH-nee kə-MAR-ə, was born on May 8th, 2000 and is a Belgium-born professional basketball athlete currently playing for the Portland Trail Blazers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He had a humble upbringing in Belgium prior to migrating to the United States, where his athletic prowess truly came to demonstration at Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School in Hollywood, Florida.

Born and raised in bustling Brussels, Belgium, Toumani’s roots extend beyond home. His mother, Anne Le Docte, holds a mixed lineage of Belgian and Haitian, while his father’s origins can be traced back to Mali. His upbringing was predominantly shouldered by his mother after his father passed away when he was only five years old. His family life encountered another solemn phase when his infant sister succumbed to lung complications, three months into her life. These significant events have had a profound impact on Toumani’s life, that are visibly etched onto his skin as four butterfly tattoos on his right leg, each signifying his mother, brother, late sister, and himself.

It was his brother who initially ignited Toumani’s interest in basketball, seeding the love for the sport in him. Gaining initial experience from a local court that was typically overrun by soccer-crazed players, Toumani would await his turn in the later hours of the day. His curiosity and zeal to explore the world of American basketball were quenched with the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournaments broadcast in Belgium. He unfolded and absorbed the pulse and pace of NBA spectacles late into the sleepless nights through a website broadcasting live games. During this time, he developed a particular admiration for Miami Heat’s champion player, Dwyane Wade.

Toumani’s dedication and perseverance started paying off, arousing attention as a promising basketball player. He got an opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities on an international platform when he was shortlisted to the Belgium national team at the 2016 FIBA U16 European Championship Division B. Meanwhile, the connection between his Belgian coach and a coach located in Weston, Florida facilitated his move to pursue further academic and sports opportunities at Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School in Hollywood, Florida.

His performance at the preparatory school, where he maintained an impressive average in his junior and senior seasons, did not go unnoticed. It opened the doors to college basketball as more than 30 NCAA Division I schools offered him a recruitment opportunity. Although he was presented with the options of University of Dayton and Kansas State University, he chose to commit to the University of Georgia’s Bulldogs on October 1, 2018.

Despite sharing the Georgia Bulldogs’ court with Anthony Edwards, the future #1 pick of the 2020 NBA draft, Camara’s unique skills and prowess were distinctively evident. In his freshman year, he averaged 6.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. However, even after averaging 12.8 points and 7.7 rebounds in his sophomore year, he decided to transfer to the Dayton Flyers post-season with an intention to develop a more rounded skill-set.

At Dayton Flyers, he committed to an average of 10.9 points scoring and 6.9 rebounds in the 2021-2022 season. Toumani’s performance stood out, earning him a nomination for the All-Atlantic 10 Conference third team. His decision to withdraw from the 2022 NBA draft after the initial process gave him the opportunity to concentrate on his game. Here, he emerged as a fourth-year team captain and averaged 13.9 points and 8.6 rebounds per game, which secured him a spot in the All-Atlantic 10 first team and the all-defensive team.

On April 25, 2023, Camara publicly declared his decision to be part of the 2023 NBA draft. His potential and skill-set earned him an invitation to the NBA Draft Combine. Following his selection in the NBA draft as the 52nd pick by the Phoenix Suns, Toumani Camara signed a four-year rookie scaled contract on July 3rd, 2023.

However, a major twist in his basketball career came in the form of a trade to the Portland Trail Blazers alongside teammates Jrue Holiday and Deandre Ayton, causing him to forfeit his final season of collegiate eligibility. He also formed part of the team in a three-way trade that involved Damian Lillard moving to the Milwaukee Bucks and the Phoenix Suns receiving Grayson Allen, Jusuf Nurkić, Nassir Little, and Keon Johnson.

On October 25th, shortly after the trade, he made his debut game against the Los Angeles Clippers for the Trail Blazers, opening his scorecard with seven points, an assist, and two rebounds.

Before his prominent basketball career in America, he also represented Belgium on a youth level at the 2016 FIBA U16 European Championship Division B, where he averaged 2.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.
