Simone Fontecchio

Simone Fontecchio, born on December 9th, 1995, embarked on the journey to professional basketball at a young age. Turning heads as a teenager, his raw talent soon garnered attention and he developed into one of Italy’s most promising players. Fontecchio is recognized as a lynchpin for the Utah Jazz, one of the revered teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA), exhibiting his profound skills in the small forward position.

From an early stage in his career, Fontecchio forged a name for himself, participating in, and even emerging victorious in, notable youth tournaments. A particular highlight was his leadership for Virtus Bologna in winning the Italian Under 17 championship in the 2011-12 season, and subsequent Under 19 championships within the same year and also in the 2012-13 season.

His impressive advancement from the Virtus U19 team to the senior side occurred during the 2012-13 season. This promotion afforded him the opportunity to alternate between the teams during the season. He tasted first division excitement when he played on 4 November 2011, and later went on to have an impactful stat sheet, although missing five shots.

The spark in his career led to speculation about his potential move to the United States to play high school and college basketball. However, showing deep-seated loyalty to Virtus, Fontecchio signed a five-year professional contract with the team in June 2013. As he was still a minor, his parents were present during the contract signing.

After two consecutive selections for the All Star Game (2014 and 2015), Fontecchio was honored with the Best Player Under 22 title in May 2015. His exemplary performances during that season also led to his first participation in the playoffs, where he scored an average of 10.3 points and acquired 3.3 rebounds per game.

In anticipation of joining the global basketball powerhouse, the NBA, Fontecchio declared for the 2015 NBA draft on 25 April. However, he opted to withdraw his candidacy on 16 June 2015. Reflecting his unwavering resilience, after wrestling with an unsatisfying season in 2018-19, Fontecchio flourished with Alba Berlin and delivered an outstanding performance with an average of 10.6 points in over 23 minutes per game.

In July 2021, Fontecchio joined Baskonia, a team affiliated with Spain’s Liga ACB. However, his journey took a turn when he signed a two-year contract with the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Utah Jazz in July 2022. Making his NBA debut on 19 October, Fontecchio impressively sealed a game-winning dunk against the Golden State Warriors on December 7, boosting his team to a 124-123 win. By 14 December 2023, he had recorded his career high against the Portland Trail Blazers, scoring an outstanding 24 points on an 87% field goal percentage.

Internationally, Fontecchio represented Italy in several under-age teams’ championships, beginning with the U16’s in the 2011 European Championship. In 2020, he was part of the Italian team at the Summer Olympics basketball tournament, leading his team in scoring in their win against Germany.

In 2023, he led Italy to the 8th place in the FIBA Basketball World Cup Championship, averaging an impressive 18.0 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. His unwavering dedication and displays of skill led to his recognition on the All-FIBA World Cup Second Team.

In his personal life, Fontecchio’s mother, Malì Pomilio, a former basketball player for Italy and two-time European titleholder, served as an influential figure in his career choices. Additionally, his father Daniele, a professional hurdler, and older brother Luca, a fellow basketball player, played pivotal roles in shaping his career. Fontecchio’s love for the sport took him from his hometown, Pescara, to Bologna at the young age of 14, living in shared accommodation with other Virtus youth players. His experiences reflect his enduring dedication to basketball and the sacrifices he made for his love of the game.
