Marial Makur Shayok, born July 26, 1995, is a prominent South Sudanese-Canadian professional basketball player with a compelling life story. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, to Sudanese parents, Makur and Helena, Shayok’s love for basketball traces back to his family roots. His father, Makur, was a former basketball player at the University of Dayton. Shayok’s passion for the game was also inspired by his siblings. Yar, his sister, played for the University of Detroit Mercy before going pro in France, and his older brother Shayok was a player at the IMG Academy & Bradley University.

Shayok’s basketball journey began at a young age of seven, spurred by admiration for NBA legends like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Penny Hardaway, and Dwyane Wade. His early basketball experiences were gained on playgrounds and at the neighborhood YMCA.

School saw Shayok attending Blair Academy under Coach Joe Mantegna. During this time, he distinguished himself, earning First Team All-Prep selection by The Star-Ledger. After leaving high school, Shayok signed with Marquette college, but never had a chance to play there.

Instead, in his freshman year at Virginia, he averaged 3.8 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. His performance improved in his sophomore year, and by his junior year, he averaged 8.9 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. His most commendable moment at Virginia was scoring 23 points in their victory against the UNC Wilmington Seahawks in the NCAA Tournament. Following this, Shayok chose to transfer to Iowa State in 2017.

His career at Iowa State saw significant milestones. Among these, his 24-point victory over Kansas in the 2019 game stands out. Shayok’s game-high 21 points in the Big 12 Conference tournament semifinals against Kansas State further established his basketball prowess, leading Iowa State to victory. His achievements led to his selection as the Big 12 tournament MVP and the Big 12 Player of the Week award.

His post-college career began with his selection in the 54th overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. Fulfilling a two-way contract with the 76ers, Shayok balanced his time between the 76ers and their G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats. His scoring rate and rebounds were impressive, earning him the G League Player of the Week honor in 2019. In 2020, Shayok made his NBA debut for the 76ers, although they later waived him.

Starting 2021, Shayok joined Frutti Extra Bursaspor of the Turkish Super League, where he played 12 games and averaged 18.9 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 4.2 assists. His commendable performance caught the attention of fellow Turkish club Fenerbahçe, signing him for a two-year deal.

Shayok later joined the Maine Celtics in 2022, maintaining an average of 19.7 points per game for the 2022-2023 season. His journey then took him to the Chinese Basketball Association, where he played for Liaoning Flying Leopards.

In November 2024, Shayok secured a contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv of the Israeli Basketball Premier League. The same year, he represented the South Sudan national team in the FIBA World Cup, helping them qualify for the 2024 Olympics.
