Konstantinos Mitoglou's Biography
Born on June 11, 1996, in Greece, Konstantinos “Dinos” Mitoglou is a Greek professional basketball player who currently serves as the vice-captain for Panathinaikos in the Greek Basketball League (GBL) and the EuroLeague. Standing tall at 2.10 m, Mitoglou plays as a power forward but occasionally steps into the role of a center.
Mitoglou’s early days in basketball were sculpted by his time with the youth teams of Greek clubs Asteria Academy and Aris. His entry into top-tier level basketball began with his debut season for Aris Thessaloniki in the Greek Basket League. Mitoglou made his first Greek Basket League appearance against Olympiacos on 30 November 2013. During the 2013-14 season, he played a total of three games with Aris.
Despite his exposure to professional basketball, Mitoglou managed to maintain his amateur status, making him eligible for college basketball. He spent three years (2014 to 2017) playing NCAA Division I college basketball at Wake Forest University. In his college career, Mitoglou appeared in 96 games, with 75 starts, averaging 9.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.
On completing his time at Wake Forest University, where he played three seasons of D1 basketball, Mitoglou swapped his student-athlete status for professionalism. He was registered with the Greek Basket League club Aris till the end of 2017 and playing while simultaneously attending university. After his junior season, he decided to fully commit to a professional basketball career.
Accelerating his professional journey, Mitoglou, in 2017, inked a four-year contract with Panathinaikos. The deal promised him a net income of 2 million dollars. His association with Greek clubs continued when he signed a two-year deal worth 1.8 million Euros with the Italian powerhouse Olimpia Milano in 2021.
However, Mitoglou faced a significant hurdle in his career when he was embroiled in a doping scandal involving illegal pharmaceutical products. This took place from March 2022 until July 2023. Amid the investigation, FIBA suspended him for 32 months on March 9, 2023. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland later reduced his sentence to 16 months. This meant Mitoglou could partake in FIBA events from July 28, 2023.
Post his suspension, Mitoglou made his comeback to Panathinaikos on July 6, 2023 and signed a three-year contract with them. Mitoglou’s prowess is not just limited to club basketball. He started playing for Greece at the junior level, participating in multiple championships such as the 2012 FIBA Europe Under-16 championship, the 2013 & 2014 FIBA Europe Under-18 championship, and the 2015 Under-19 FIBA World Cup.
In 2017, Mitoglou was absorbed into the senior Greek national basketball team. He took part in the 2019 FIBA World Cup qualification and the 2020 Victoria FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
Born into a family of athletes, Mitoglou’s father, Dimitrios Mitoglou, was a professional football player who played for clubs like PAOK and Doxa Drama. His brother, Gerasimos Mitoglou, also chose a career in professional football. Sports clearly runs in the Mitoglou family, without a doubt, but Dinos chose a different path and opted for basketball, proving himself to be an important asset to his team and his country.
