It was on this day that he was chosen by the Grand Rapids Drive in the fourth round of the 2015 NBA Development League Draft.

The subsequent year led him to debut impressively in the D-League, marking a 90–87 victory against the Iowa Energy. Despite only getting seven minutes of playtime, Romero managed to contribute to this win with one point and one rebound. By March 20 of 2016, Romero dominated the game with double-double scoring in a 102–97 win against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants. In his 27 games throughout the period, he averaged 5.4 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, proving his consistent contribution.

Romero did not limit his skills to a single league. On April 6th, 2016, he inked a deal with Atléticos de San Germán of the Puerto Rican League. Romero did not waste time in proving his worth, making his debut for San Germán the very next day. Despite a team loss, he made a significant impact in the game with a respectable contribution of 11 points, three rebounds, three assists, and one steal within 17 minutes. One of his career highlights includes being named the BSN Rookie of the Year on May 26th in the same year. His stats were strong throughout these 17 games, as he averaged 13.0 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.

His prowess also caught the attention of international teams. On August 30, 2016, Romero signed with the Mexican team, Panteras de Aguascalientes. Through his 24 games with this team, he racked up an average of 18.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 0.8 steals per game.

Reuniting with Grand Rapids Drive in 2017, Romero marked his season debut with a thrilling win over the Santa Cruz Warriors. He later returned to Puerto Rican soil when he signed with Atléticos de San Germán for the second time. Romero also explored the international leagues further; he signed a contract with Hapoel Haifa B.C., an Israeli basketball team, which competes in the well-regarded Liga Leumit.

While Romero had an impressive career, his journey wasn’t without challenges. During his days as a 19-year-old player for the Cuba national basketball team at the 2012 Centrobasket, he and four other teammates found themselves on the losing end of an 81–61 game against Bahamas. However, it was not just the loss that marked this day. This very night brought about significant change in Romero’s life when he, along with his four teammates, abandoned the team and asked for political asylum in Puerto Rico.

Romero’s story is one of resilience and determination. His lasting commitment to the sport went beyond local adoration. In 2021, the Puerto Rican Basketball Federation began the process with FIBA to allow the Cuban-born star to represent the Puerto Rican national basketball team. The initiation came to a successful conclusion as on October 5, FIBA granted the request for Romero’s naturalization.
