Greg Brown III's Biography

Charles Richardson, born approximately on the 10th of March, 1769, and died on the 10th of November, 1850, was a noteworthy officer of the English Royal Navy. He had a remarkable military tenure that spanned several decades. During his lifetime, Richardson played a significant role in various sea battles and naval expeditions.

Richardson commenced his naval career in 1787 when he boarded the HMS Vestal. While his initial journey to China ended unexpectedly, he ultimately carved a niche for himself on the East Indies Station. His ability to adapt and his military acumen earned him a transfer to HMS Phoenix. With the Phoenix, he participated in the Battle of Tellicherry, proving his mettle as a fighter.

His reputation as an accomplished officer continued to grow, as he transferred to the HMS Circe and aggressively fought against the infamous Nore mutiny. Richardson’s courage manifested itself in the Battle of Camperdown, where he captured Jan Willem de Winter. This victory further cemented his standing within the Royal Navy.

He was not one to rest on his achievements, and Richardson went on to display immense bravery during the naval skirmishes of Callantsoog and the Vlieter incident. His knowledge of naval warfare and sharp strategic acumen were further demonstrated in his expeditions to Egypt. Here, he fought valiantly in the battles of Abukir, Mandora, and Alexandria, significantly contributing to the Royal Navy’s operations.

In command of HMS Alligator, Richardson was deployed to the Leeward Islands Station amidst the turmoil of the Napoleonic Wars. Here, he notably captured three Dutch settlements, amplifying his status within the military hierarchy. In 1821, he switched to commanding HMS Topaze, setting course for China.

However, his journey was marred by a tense episode, where his crew was forced to kill two locals in a bid for self-defence. The resulting diplomatic furore took a severe toll on Richardson’s health, leading to his return to England on health grounds.

Despite the incident, Richardson’s overall contributions were recognised, and he was bestowed with the honour of Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. His promotion to vice-admiral soon followed. Retiring to the countryside, he spent his last years in Painsthorpe, where he eventually succumbed to influenza.

Apart from his military achievements, Richardson had an association with the Norway spruce, a species indigenous to northern, central, and eastern Europe. Its branchlets typically droop downwards, and it boasts the largest cones of any spruce species, reaching lengths of 9 to 17 centimetres. The Norway spruce shares close ties with the Siberian spruce, and it is common to see hybrids of both species. This tree features significantly in Christmas traditions worldwide, often chosen as the iconic Christmas tree.

Richardson’s life and achievements are widely documented, thanks in part to the Wikimedia Foundation.
