Buddy Hield

Chavano Rainer “Buddy” Hield, born on December 17, 1992, is a remarkable Bahamian professional basketball player known for his exceptional skills on the court. Currently, he plays for the Philadelphia 76ers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Throughout his illustrious career, Hield has continuously amazed fans with his ability to remain at the top of his game, exhibiting leadership both on and off the court.

Buddy grew up in a humble family in Eight Mile Rock, a coastal part of Freeport, located in the West Grand Bahama district. He was the fifth of seven children to his mother, Jackie Braynen. His nickname, Buddy, was given by his mother, inspired by Bud Bundy, a character from the popular sitcom “Married…With Children.”

Buddy was an early bloomer, showing his talent for basketball from a young age. Recognizing his potential, The All Bahamian Brand, a local sports magazine, featured Buddy while still in eighth grade, labeling him as a rising star to watch.

Buddy first demonstrated his knack for leadership when he led his Jack Hayward High School basketball team to victory in the championship of the Providence Holiday Tournament and the Grand Bahamas High School Championships. In honor of his achievements, Buddy was selected as an All Bahamian Brand All Bahamian Selection.

After achieving success at the local level, Buddy caught the attention of several basketball prep schools, and ultimately chose to attend Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, Kansas. Under the guidance of former Wichita State assistant coach Kyle Lindsted, Buddy continued to grow as a player. During his junior year, he led his team to win the title in the National Association of Christian Athletes national championship, earning an MVP title for his performance.

The incredible performances Buddy churned out during his school years garnered a significant amount of attention, leading him to be highly sought after. Eventually, he chose the Oklahoma Sooners, where he enjoyed a successful college basketball career. He was named the Big 12 Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year in both 2015 and 2016. Moreover, in 2016, Buddy picked up four major national player of the year awards — the John R. Wooden Award, the Naismith Award, Sporting News Player of the Year, and the Oscar Robertson Trophy.

Buddy’s burgeoning reputation as a formidable talent coveted by professional clubs saw him get selected with the sixth overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft by the New Orleans Pelicans. He spent a year with the team before being traded to the Sacramento Kings in 2017, in a deal for DeMarcus Cousins.

Buddy continued to elevate his status, impressing with his performances on the court. His consistent shooting ability and leadership skills led to his fourth trade – to the Indiana Pacers for Domantas Sabonis in 2022. However, he was not with the Pacers for long before being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in February 2024.

In his personal life, Buddy is a doting father to a daughter born in 2017. A compassionate individual, Buddy has proven to be a generous and caring personality off the court too. He donated $105,000 to the Hurricane Dorian Relief fund following the catastrophic event and initiated a GoFundMe page aiming to raise an additional $1,000,000 to assist families affected by the hurricane. A testament to his character and spirit, Buddy Hield continues to inspire and impress with his performances, both on and off the basketball court.
