Adama Sanogo

Adama Sanogo, a professional basketball player for the prestigious Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association (NBA), was born on the 12th of February in 2002. Not only does Sanogo play for the Chicago Bulls, but he is also on a two-way contract with the Windy City Bulls of the NBA G League. He accomplished a monumental career highlight in 2023 when he led the UConn Huskies to a national championship victory and was awarded the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four.

Sanogo’s early years were spent in Bamako, the bustling capital city of Mali. Soccer initially claimed his interest, but at the age of twelve, in 2014, he discovered his true love: basketball. This significant transition was facilitated by his uncle, Tidiane Dramé, who was a seasoned basketball scout, who recognized his potential and nudged him towards the sport.

In a courageous move to further his basketball career, Sanogo left his home country in 2015 to join the prestigious Our Savior New American School in Centereach, New York. However, due to a coaching overhaul at his previous institution, he eventually transferred to The Patrick School situated in Hillside, New Jersey. During his senior season, Sanogo made a significant impact on the court, averaging 13.3 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. He also gained valuable competitive experience playing for the New York Rens on the Amateur Athletic Union circuit.

Following a successful high school career, Sanogo was considered a consensus four-star recruit, and ultimately, he committed to playing college basketball for UConn, despite receiving enticing offers from Seton Hall and Nebraska.

Sanogo’s extraordinary talent was recognized early in his freshman year at UConn. By the third game of the season, he was starting, and, by March 2021, he conveyed his burgeoning potential with a season-high record of 16 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks in a sensational win over Seton Hall. He finished his freshman year with an average of 7.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game, earning him the honor of being named to the Big East All-Freshman Team.

Sanogo continued to display his skill and versatility, scoring a career-high 30 points in a November 2021 match against Auburn. Despite an abdominal injury in December potentially derailing his momentum, Sanogo’s stellar performance throughout the season led to him being named to the First Team All-Big East.

Arguably, 2023 was Sanogo’s defining year. He led UConn to a national championship victory and was subsequently named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player, becoming the first African-born player to earn this accolade since Hakeem Olajuwon in 1983.

Post-college, despite not being selected in the 2023 NBA draft, on July 10, Sanogo signed a two-way contract with the Chicago Bulls, proving that hard work and perseverance pay off. In December of the same year, Sanogo made his NBA debut for the Bulls, showcasing his remarkable athletic gift on the world stage.

Aside from his collegiate and professional achievements, Sanogo has also proudly represented Mali on the global stage, winning a gold medal at the 2017 FIBA Under-16 African Championship in Mauritius where he averaged 10.5 points and eight rebounds per game. He continued to represent his nation at the 2018 FIBA Under-17 World Cup, averaging six points and seven rebounds per game.

Off the court, Sanogo is deeply connected to his roots and family. The son of Cheickne Sanogo and Awa Traore, he is one of six children, being surrounded by four sisters and one brother. Along with his family ties, Sanogo’s Muslim faith has also been a significant part of his journey. In 2023, due to the timing of Ramadan, Sanogo was fasting during the NCAA tournament. Regardless, he put forth exceptional performances, proving that commitment to both faith and sport can coexist harmoniously.
