A Member of Major League Baseball and a world-renowned talent, Faridoon Yu Darvish Sefat, better known as Yu Darvish, has established himself as a force in the realm of professional baseball. Born on August 16, 1986 in Habikino, Osaka, Darvish is currently a pitcher for the San Diego Padres. Throughout his prolific career, he has also played for the Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Chicago Cubs, along with Nippon Professional Baseball’s team, Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in his home country, Japan.
On an international level, Darvish has represented Japan in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2009 World Baseball Classic. Prior to coming to America, Darvish was considered the best pitcher in all of Japan, and upon his move in 2012, his reputation only grew. His first MLB season was highly acclaimed, earning him third place in the American League (AL) Rookie of the Year voting. Subsequently, he finished second in the AL Cy Young Award vote as he led the Major Leagues in strikeouts with an impressive count of 277. Further solidifying his prowess, Darvish reached the 500-strikeout mark quicker than any starting pitcher in MLB history on April 6, 2014.
Darvish’s baseball journey began when he started playing the sport during his time at Habikino Boys in second grade. He exhibited exemplary talent, leading his team to the national tournament quarterfinals and achieving a third-place finish in the international tournament. In junior high school, his undeniable talent caught the eyes of over 50 high schools, a testament to his early promise.
Opting to attend Tohoku High School in Northern Sendai, a renowned baseball powerhouse San Diego which has produced exceptional players such as former Seattle Mariners and Yokohama BayStars closer Kazuhiro Sasaki and former BayStars and Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Takashi Saito. Darvish became Tohoku High’s star pitcher by his first year, earning his team four straight appearances in national tournaments at the Koshien Stadium.
Darvish entered the public eye when he pitched a no-hitter against Kumamoto Technical High School during his senior year in March 2004, placing him firmly on the radar of major league teams like the Anaheim Angels and Atlanta Braves. Despite the international interest, Darvish’s preference was to play for a Japanese professional team.
Following completion of high school, he was considered a top-notch pitcher along with his contemporaries Hideaki Wakui and Tsuyoshi Sato in the 2004 NPB amateur draft. The Fighters obtained Darvish as their first-round pick, signing him to a handsome base salary of ¥15,000,000, and a signing bonus of ¥100,000,000 on December 17, 2004.
While his talent was undeniable, Darvish faced controversy when he was caught smoking in a pachinko parlor during his first greenfield spring training in 2005; he was underage at the time for both smoking and gambling. This incident led to a suspension and an obligation to participate in community service, but didn’t deter his meteoric rise in the game.
After the suspension, Darvish debuted professionally against the Carp on June 15, the same year. Even though he let in two home runs, the rest of his performance was outstanding, helping him become the 12th pitcher in NPB history to accomplish a win in his debut as a rookie straight from high school. His first MLB season saw him finish with a commendable 5–5 record.
Since then, Darvish has remained a dominant figure in both domestic and international baseball. In the 2007 Asian Baseball Championship, he debuted for the national team, having chosen to retain his Japanese citizenship per the country’s dual citizenship rules. This allowed him to represent Japan in international championships such as the Olympics.
Throughout his baseball career, Darvish has displayed remarkable talent, skill, and commitment to the game. His record and numerous accolades speak volumes about his standing as a premier pitcher in MLB today, making him one of the revered figures in modern baseball history.
