Tylor Megill's Biography

Tylor J. Megill, affectionately nicknamed “Big Drip”, is an American professional baseball pitcher who is making waves in the Major League Baseball (MLB) scene playing for the New York Mets. Moments of significant triumph in his still-burgeoning sports career include his MLB debut in 2021 and a five-inning pitch that contributed to a combined no-hitter on April 29th, 2022.

Megill drew his first breath on the sandy shores of Long Beach, California, on July 28, 1995. Loving parents Julie and Kevin Megill welcomed their son, perhaps with little inkling of his future stardom. During his formative years, he attended Los Alamitos High School, where his talent for pitching emerged while a member of their baseball team.

Despite not being drafted in the 2014 Major League Baseball draft, Tylor decided to take his game to the next level by attending Loyola Marymount University, where he played college baseball. During his freshman year in 2015, he demonstrated his capabilities by pitching 57 innings, going 6–3 with a solid 3.95 ERA. Seeking new opportunities and experiences, he transferred to Cypress College in 2016 and kept up his stellar performance record, going 11–3 with a 3.72 ERA over 17 matches.

In 2017, he took another leap of faith and transferred to the University of Arizona. As a junior, he offered a 2–3 record and a 5.55 ERA over 35+2⁄3 innings. His performances were mainly in relief. In his senior year in 2018, he attained a 1–3 record with a 4.73 ERA over 32+1⁄3 innings, striking out 38 players and collecting six saves. His talents did not go unnoticed. After the season, he was picked by the New York Mets in the eighth round of the 2018 Major League Baseball draft.

Megill seized this golden ticket to the big leagues and signed with the Mets. He then made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones where he maintained a 1–2 record with a 3.21 ERA over 28 innings as a reliever. In 2019, Megill started the season with the Columbia Fireflies before he earned promotions to the St. Lucie Mets and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. He played 22 games across the three clubs, maintaining a 6–7 performance with a 3.52 ERA and striking out 92 batters in over 71+1⁄3 innings.

However, like all athletes, Tylor experienced setbacks. The 2020 season was notably challenging due to the COVID-19 pandemic that led to the cancellation of the minor league season. Unfazed, Megill returned to Binghamton, now members of the Double-A Northeast League, in 2021. After showing his mettle by pitching to a 3.12 ERA over 26 innings, he was once again promoted, this time to the Syracuse Mets of the Triple-A East League in June.

June 23, 2021, marked a crucial milestone for Megill when he was added to the 40-man roster and elevated to the major leagues. His inaugural major league game was against the Atlanta Braves where he pitched an impressive 4⅓ innings. His play led the Mets to a 7-3 victory despite giving up 2 earned runs.

As Megill settled into the rhythm of the major leagues, he celebrated another highlight of his career on July 23 when he earned his first major league win against the Toronto Blue Jays, pitching six shutout innings. The same game also saw him collect his first career hit, a single off Blue Jays starter Steven Matz.

Indeed, 2022 was a significant year for Megill’s career trajectory. He was named the Mets’ Opening Day starter due to the injuries of key players Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer, a surprise announcement hailed by the New York Post as possibly the most unlikely in Mets history. This was followed by his remarkable contribution on April 29 when he pitched the first five innings of a combined no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Despite enduring a stint on the injured list due to right bicep inflammation and a subsequent return to the league as a relief pitcher, Megill’s resilience was unwavering. He was unfortunately placed on the COVID-19 injured list shortly before the final game of the regular season.

Starting the 2023 season, he was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse. It was here that on May 1, Megill’s pitch forced Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. to leave the game with a left shoulder contusion. This incident marked the second game of a doubleheader.

After regaining full form and beating out José Butto in spring training, Tylor emerged as the fifth starter for the Mets in the 2024 season. Baseball is evidently a family affair for the Megills, with Tylor’s older brother Trevor also being a pitcher in Major League Baseball. As Tylor continues to hone his skills, fans eagerly watch, confident that the best is yet to come for this emerging star.
