Tristan Gray's Biography

Tristan Colby Gray was born on March 22, 1996. A native of Missouri City, Texas, he went on to become a professional baseball player and eventually joined the prestigious ranks of Major League Baseball (MLB). Twelve years after his birth, in the summer of 2008, Tristan attended Elkins High School in Texas, where he gained the necessary exposure for his sporting talent. His high school years were marked by brilliant performances on the baseball field, setting the base for the brilliant career that lay ahead.

While at Elkins, Gray showcased remarkable baseball skills. As a senior, he boasted an impressive batting average of .456 with 12 doubles and 23 RBIs. Upon graduating in 2014, Gray saw new opportunities open up. He found himself being selected by the New York Mets in the 37th round of the 2014 MLB draft. Despite the lucrative offer, Tristan decided not to sign, instead choosing to further his academic studies and sports career simultaneously by enrolling at Rice University.

At Rice, Gray studied while playing college baseball for the Rice Owls. His rookie year in 2015 was exemplary, with him appearing in 56 games, scoring three home runs and reaching 25 RBIs. Tristan’s second year in the inter-college baseball saw ups and downs; it was punctuated by an injury at the beginning of the year. However, he returned to form, scoring five home runs and 18 RBIs in 42 games.

In 2016, Tristan shone on the national stage. He played collegiate summer baseball in the Cape Cod Baseball League for the Falmouth Commodores and ended up being named a league all-star.

By the close of his junior year in 2017, Gray had managed to fashion an impressive score with eight home runs and 39 RBIs in 47 games. This performance did not go unnoticed, and he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 13th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft. Taking the opportunity, he signed, making his grand professional debut for the West Virginia Black Bears, a team part of the Low–A New York-Penn League. Here, his exceptional success was recognized, and he was named an All-Star.

In 2018, facing unforeseen circumstances, the Pirates traded Gray, along with Daniel Hudson and cash, to the Tampa Bay Rays for Corey Dickerson. Gray went on to play for the Rays with vigor, even amidst the to-and-fro movement.

Then, in 2019, he joined the Montgomery Biscuits, a Double–A Southern League team. He played well all season, although his statistics took a slight hit. Despite this, his performance was of merit, with noteworthy contributions throughout the games. The 2020 season bore a grim outlook due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the cancellation of the minor league season. Despite this setback, 2021 was a brighter year, with Gray returning to the Durham Bulls.

After another year with the Bulls, a turning point came in Gray’s career in 2023. He was re-signed to play in Durham, and in 127 games, he recorded 28 home runs and a career–high 91 RBI. The hard-hitting infielder saw his baseball career apex when he was selected to the 40-man roster and promoted to Major League baseball after Taylor Walls was called to the paternity list.

Following his short stint with the Rays, Gray was removed from the 40–man roster in November, but he kept the momentum going, signing a minor league contract with the Miami Marlins. The Marlins added Gray to their major league roster, where he played in seven games. Unfortunately, he was then designated for assignment, only to be claimed by Oakland Athletics the very next day.

Today, Tristan Gray stands as a shining example of persistence and passion in the world of baseball. An acknowledgment of his journey from a high school player to a professional baseball infielder is not only an acknowledgement of his talent but also of the untiring persistence that he has shown over the years.
