Trea Turner

The renowned baseball player Trea Vance Turner was born on June 30, 1993. He has made his name in professional baseball as a versatile player, skilled as a shortstop, second baseman, and center fielder. The Pittsburgh Pirates recognized his potential and selected him in the 20th round, with the 602nd overall selection, of the 2011 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft. Despite this offer, Turner opted to play college baseball for the NC State Wolfpack baseball team – a decision that substantially shaped the next phase of his baseball career.

Turner’s college days were a turning point in his career. Showing a commendable adaptability, he switched positions from shortstop to third baseman as a freshman in 2012. His batting average was an impressive .336 with an on-base percentage of .432. Interestingly, his 57 stolen bases were more than the team totals of 158 Division I teams, setting an NC State record. He also tied the ACC record for steals in one game with five. These milestones led to him being named to the All-Tournament Team in the 2012 ACC Tournament.

Turner showed consistent progression throughout his college years. In 2013, he had a .378 batting average, and he demonstrated his versatility with seven home runs, 41 runs batted in (RBIs), and 27 stolen bases, leading him to be named to the All-ACC first team. Other accolades during his college career included being named a second-team All-American by Perfect Game, a third-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Baseball America, and a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award, given to the best shortstop in NCAA’s Division I.

This continually improving performance was recognized by the San Diego Padres, who selected Turner in the first round, with the 13th overall selection in the 2014 MLB draft. He signed on June 13, receiving a $2.9 million signing bonus, and made his professional debut three days later with the Eugene Emeralds of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League.
