Tanner Bibee

Tanner Hayes Bibee, pronounced BY-bee, was born on March 5, 1999. Notably, he has built a reputable career as an American professional baseball player, known for his extraordinary pitching skills. Bibee plays for the Cleveland Guardians, a team that is a part of the Major League Baseball (MLB). His Major League Baseball debut, a significant milestone for any baseball player, took place in 2023.

Bibee’s early life and education were deeply ingrained in the sunny state of California. He attended Mission Viejo High School situated in Mission Viejo, a city that embodies the essence of Californian lifestyle. Apart from this, he also honed his baseball skills at California State University, Fullerton where he played college baseball and got the opportunity to be a part of a highly competitive environment.

In the summer of 2019, Bibee struck gold when he got the chance to play collegiate summer baseball with the Wareham Gatemen, the famous team from the Cape Cod Baseball League. His performance was well-received that season and therefore, he was eligible for the Major League Baseball Draft in 2020, but fortune had other plans. He went undrafted and decided to return to Fullerton for his senior year.

In a turnaround of events, Bibee was selected by the Cleveland Guardians during the fifth round of the 2021 MLB Draft. He made his professional debut with the Lake County Captains, a minor league team, a year later in 2022. During the same year, Bibee divided his time between Lake County and the Double-A Akron RubberDucks. This period of his baseball career was impeccable as he boasted an 8-2 record and a commendable 2.17 ERA, along with an impressive 167 strikeouts during his 1322⁄3 innings pitched across 25 games.

Progressing to the 2023 season, he began playing for the Triple-A Columbus Clippers and started off with a promising 2-0 record and 1.76 ERA. His form also saw him achieve 19 strikeouts in just 3 starts before he received a promotion to the major leagues for the first time on April 26, 2023.

The promotion turned out to be a fortunate event as he made his major league debut the same day as a starting pitcher against the Colorado Rockies. This debut was nothing short of legendary as Bibee became the first Cleveland pitcher in the live-ball era (1920-present) to record five consecutive strikeouts in a Major League debut. He concluded the game with a mind-blowing final line of 52⁄3 innings pitched, registering eight strikeouts and one earned run which subsequently led to the recording of his first career win.

Cheers and praises followed him as he ended the year with 25 starts for Cleveland, a stand-out record of 10–4, and a 2.98 ERA. In addition, he also had an astonishing tally of 141 strikeouts in 142.0 innings of work. But as the adage goes, every rose has its thorn, Bibee’s otherwise stellar year was cut short due to right hip inflammation. This unfortunate circumstance led to Bibee missing the remainder of the year and landing him on the 60–day injured list, as announced on September 24.
