Rhys Hoskins's Biography

Rhys Dean Hoskins was born on March 17, 1993, in Sacramento, California. Known for his competitiveness from a young age, he was born to parents, Paul and Cathy Hoskins, who were both lawyers. His deep-rooted love for sports began in his early childhood, and he had an affinity towards card and board games, along with pickup games with the family. As Law practitioners, his parents encouraged him to diversify his concentration and promptly dissuaded him from focusing on a single sport.

Tragedy struck early in Hoskins’ life when his mother succumbed to breast cancer in 2009. Following his mother’s death, he found solace in his younger sister, Meloria, with whom he grew closer. His childhood was also marked by his admiration for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball (MLB), during which he began modeling his baseball performance, drawing inspiration from J. T. Snow and Paul Goldschmidt.

During his high school years at Jesuit High School in Carmichael, California, Hoskins showed sporting dexterity, playing baseball, basketball, and football. An academic achiever, Hoskins maintained a 4.0 grade-point average throughout his high school years. After graduating in 2011, he decided to further hone his mental skills in baseball, thus choosing to play college baseball at the California State University. He played for the Sacramento State Hornets and displayed a notable performance while playing college baseball.

Hoskins’ early professional career started off with the Philadelphia Phillies who selected him in the fifth round of the 2014 MLB draft. The year 2017 saw his MLB debut, and he served as the Phillies’ starting first baseman for six consecutive seasons. His career faced a setback before the 2023 season due to a torn ACL. This unfortunate incident led to him missing the entire season. Nevertheless, in 2024, Hoskins displayed his relentless spirit when he signed with the Milwaukee Brewers.

At the start of his professional career with the Philadelphia Phillies, inconsistent performance marked his initial games. However, a visit to the Florida Instructional League provided him with effective insights into enhancing his performance by refining his signature left leg kick batting stance. The consistency he showed thereafter was commendable, with Hoskins named the Minor League Player of the Month by the Phillies organization in 2015. He finished 2015 with a batting average of .319 involving 17 home runs, 90 RBIs, and 86 runs scored.

Hoskins’ career with the Phillies saw many milestones, including a sequence-breaking performance where he became the fastest player in the MLB history to reach 10 career home runs in just 17 games, in August 2017. Hoskins finished the 2017 season with a remarkable record; he had the highest OPS and slugging percentage in the league with runners in the scoring position. He also hit 18 home runs, the highest by any player who debuted in August or later.

In 2018, Hoskins set another record by becoming the fastest player in the Phillies’ history to reach 30 career home runs in merely 120 games. Despite not being named an All-Star, he was named as one of the eight participants in the MLB Home Run Derby in 2018. Hoskins made history as the first player to hit 20 home runs in a single round of the Home Run Derby.
