Reid Detmers's Biography

Reid Kristien Detmers, born on July 8, 1999, in Nokomis, Illinois, is a promising American professional Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels. Raised in a baseball-loving family, Detmers’ passion for the game was fueled from a young age by his father, Kris Detmers, who was a pitcher for several seasons in the St. Louis Cardinals’ minor league system and was with the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds at the time of Reid’s birth.

Detmers’ exceptional talent for baseball began to take root during his high school years. Attending both Nokomis and Glenwood High Schools, he lettered in baseball for four consecutive academic years. Reid made significant contributions to his school teams, earning All-Prairie State Conference recognition for all the three years at Nokomis High School. His effort and performance wasn’t unnoticed, and he was made first-team All-State during his junior year at Glenwood High School.

Despite being drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 32nd round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft, he chose to delay his professional career. Reid committed to the University of Louisville, where he played college baseball for three seasons. Throughout his time at Louisville, Detmers’ commendable performance earned him Atlantic Coast Conference honors and national recognition.

Detmers’ junior year proved to be career-defining. He was identified as one of the most sought-after prospects for the MLB draft. This anticipation became reality when he was chosen tenth overall by the Los Angeles Angels in the first round of the 2020 draft. Embracing this big break, Detmers signed with the Angels, thereby forgoing his final year of college eligibility.

Initially, he pitched only 14 games in the Angels farm system until being promoted to the major leagues in August 2021. An applaudable achievement in his first year with the Angels was making the 2022 Opening Day roster with his rookie eligibility still intact. This elevation in his career was followed by several key moments, including achieving the club’s youngest ever no-hitter on May 10, 2022, and throwing an immaculate inning in a game on July 31, 2022. Notably, these achievements made Detmers the only rookie and third-ever MLB player to throw both a no-hitter and an immaculate inning in the same season, following in the footsteps of Mike Fiers and Hall-of-Famer Sandy Koufax.

Not only was Detmers instrumental on the field, but he was also impactful off it. Growing up amid baseball culture, he managed to amass a collection of signed baseballs from players his father played with in the minor leagues.
