Orlando Arcia

Born on 4 August 1994, Orlando Jesús Arcia is a Venezuelan professional baseball shortstop known for his dedicated performances for the Atlanta Braves in the Major League Baseball (MLB). The Milwaukee Brewers spotted the latent potential in Arcia at a very young age and wasted no time signing him as an international free agent in October 2010.

In 2011, Arcia made his professional debut with the Dominican Summer League Brewers and showed an immense passion for the sport. However, his career faced an abrupt halt in 2012 due to a broken ankle he sustained during spring training. Bouncing back from adversity, Arcia returned in 2013 with renewed vigor, playing for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers of the Class A Midwest League and the Brevard County Manatees in the Class A-Advanced Florida State League in 2014.

Arcia’s commitment to his craft continued to shine in 2015 as he spent the season with the Biloxi Shuckers of the Class AA Southern League. In that same year, he made a remarkable appearance in the All-Star Futures Game. His superb batting average of .307 along with 8 home runs led him to be named the Brewers Minor League Player of the Year in 2015. The Brewers then added Arcia to their prestigious 40-man roster.

Apart from MLB, Arcia also played for the Caribes de Anzoategui of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League during the MLB’s offseason in 2014 and 2015. This league served as a valuable training ground for him.

In 2016, Arcia made the significant transition to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League, where he made his major league debut on 2 August. He played 55 games for the Brewers, hitting a respectable average of .219.

Arcia’s career in MLB continued to rise in the subsequent seasons. In 2017, he showcased an impressive performance with 15 home runs and 14 stolen bases across 153 games. The 2018 season saw a momentary setback, leading to his temporary demotion to AAA, but Arcia bounced back in no time. He was recalled in July and finished the season with satisfactory stats.

His 2019 season was defined by his batting average of .223 along with 15 home runs and 59 RBIs. After the season, Luis Urías was introduced to the Brewers roster, resulting in Arcia sharing the shortstop role in 2020.

In 2021, Arcia was traded to the Atlanta Braves where he initially played for the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers before getting recalled in July. Arcia then split his season between the two teams batting .198 and contributing to the Braves clinching the NL East.

The Braves not only triumphed in the league but also won the 2021 World Series. This victory marked the Braves’ first title win since 1995, a significant milestone in Arcia’s career. Following this success, Arcia and the Braves mutually agreed on a two-year contract worth $3 million.

Tragedy struck in August when Arcia sustained a hamstring injury during a game against the Boston Red Sox. However, he remained undeterred and trained intensively to compete against Vaughn Grissom and Braden Shewmake for the starting shortstop position in the 2023 season. Despite the odds, it was Arcia’s defensive prowess that secured him the coveted position.

On Opening Day, Arcia and the Braves announced a three-year contract extension worth $7.3 million, which included a team option for the 2026 season or a $1 million buyout. Unfortunately, a hit from Hunter Greene injured Arcia, landing him on the injured list till 6 May. Nevertheless, Arcia went on to be named the starting shortstop for the National League in the 2023 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, marking another high point in his remarkable career.
