Nick Pivetta

Nicholas John Carlo Pivetta, popularly known as Nick Pivetta, is a professional baseball pitcher from Canada. Born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia, on February 14, 1993, Pivetta is currently playing for the Boston Red Sox team of Major League Baseball (MLB). With a notable career spanning multiple teams, Pivetta has carved out a reputation as a formidable right-handed pitcher.

Pivetta traces his beginnings in the world of baseball to his high school days at Lambrick Park Secondary School in Saanich, British Columbia. Unfortunately, an ulnar collateral ligament injury in his right elbow sidelined him during his senior year. However, this set back couldn’t stop him from pursuing his passion. He was a proud member of the Canadian Junior National Team from 2009 to 2012, participating in the 2010 18U World Championship.

After graduating high school, Pivetta attended New Mexico Junior College on a baseball scholarship. Here, he bolstered his skills as a pitcher and played for the Thunderbirds. Pivetta’s performance during his time at New Mexico Junior College was impressive. As a sophomore in 2013, he boasted a 9-2 record with a 3.36 ERA. Recognizing his potential, Baseball America named him the 6th best junior college prospect in 2013. In the same year, Perfect Game USA ranked him as the 3rd best junior college prospect.

Pivetta’s professional career took off when the Washington Nationals selected him in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB draft. His first professional step in his career was with the Gulf Coast Nationals of the Rookie Gulf Coast League. Pivetta later ended the season with the Auburn Doubledays of the Class A- New York-Pennsylvania League. His performance in 2014 with the Class A Hagerstown Suns earned him a spot as a South Atlantic League mid-season All-Star. By the end of the season, Baseball America named him the 10th-best prospect in the Nationals’ minor league system.

The year 2015 saw a pivotal turn in Pivetta’s career. On July 28, the Washington Nationals traded him to the Philadelphia Phillies for Jonathan Papelbon. Two years later, in 2017, he made his MLB debut with the Phillies, following a vibrant period with the IronPigs which featured him going 5-0 with a 1.41 ERA. His following years with the Phillies saw him consistently improving his ratings with impressive gameplay.

Pivetta’s journey then led him to the Boston Red Sox in 2020. In his two appearances for the Red Sox in the 2020 season, he registered an impressive 1.80 ERA with 13 strikeouts in just 10 innings pitched, earning two wins in the process. Despite his stellar performance, Pivetta’s 2021 sidetrack involved a temporary placement on the COVID-related injured list due to vaccine side effects. Nevertheless, he continued to show resilience and clocked an admirable 4.53 ERA during the regular season, earning himself a spot in Boston’s starting rotation.

Throughout his career, Pivetta has demonstrated versatility and adaptability. Following a sluggish performance after eight starts in 2023, Pivetta was switched to a relief role. This transition was beneficial for him: he clocked in a sub-2.00 ERA and set a new franchise record for the Red Sox with 13 strikeouts in a single relief appearance.
