Nick Gonzales

Nicholas Joseph Gonzales, a distinguished name in American baseball history, was born on May 27, 1999. The seventh overpick by the stalwart Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2020 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft, Gonzales showcased his talent with an exceptional MLB debut in 2023.

Raised in Vail, Arizona, Gonzales attended Cienega High School, where his baseball potential was unearthed. For Cienega’s baseball team, Gonzales garnered a .399 batting average and 89 runs batted in (RBIs). His athletic prowess was recognized and, following high school, Gonzales received a scholarship to New Mexico State University, where he joined the university’s baseball team, the New Mexico State Aggies.

Starting his freshman year in 2018, his performance in the 57 games subverted expectations. The numbers, .347/.425/.596 batting averages along with nine home runs and 36 RBIs, served as evidence of his growing skills. Subsequently, Gonzales was crowned the Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year.

As a sophomore in 2019, Gonzales dominated the nation with a .432 batting average. His memorable season culminated in a .432/.532/.773 batting average accompanied by 16 home runs and 80 RBIs. Following this spectacular performance, Gonzales had a stupendous summer stint with the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod League, hitting .351 with seven home runs in 42 games and gaining the title of the league’s MVP.

Entering his junior year in 2020, Gonzales was viewed as an outstanding prospect for the upcoming 2020 Major League Baseball draft. His commanding performance included a .448 batting average and 12 home runs in 16 games, deemed extraordinary despite the season’s cessation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

His prowess on the field was acknowledged by the Pittsburgh Pirates, who chose him in the first round of the 2020 Major League Baseball draft, the seventh overall selection. Gonzales sealed the deal by signing a contract with the Pirates on June 23, with a lucrative signing bonus of $5.4 million. The contract would have witnessed its execution that very year; though, due to the worldwide halt on sports events caused by the pandemic, the minor league season was cancelled.

After his interrupted start, Gonzales’ professional debut happened in 2021 with the Greensboro Grasshoppers of the High-A East. He posted a .302/.385/.565 average, with 18 home runs and 54 RBIs across 80 games, despite suffering a month-long hand injury. His potential was further recognized in the Arizona Fall League, where he was named in the Fall Stars Game.

In 2022, Gonzales was signed by the Altoona Curve of the Double-A Eastern League. He attacked the field with .263 batting, 7 home runs, and 33 RBIs across 71 competitions. He continued rising through the ranks and started the 2023 season with the Indianapolis Indians of the Triple-A International League. Despite only playing 57 games, he managed a .257 average with 6 home runs and 27 RBIs. Based on this performance, he received his first promotion to the Major Leagues with the Pirates on June 23, 2023.

In his rookie campaign, he played in 35 games, batting .209/.268/.348 and achieving two home runs and 13 RBI. Though starting the 2024 season on the sidelines for Triple–A Indianapolis, he was soon recalled by the Pirates on May 9, 2024, a date marking another milestone in Gonzales’ flourishing career in baseball.
