Mauricio Dubon's Biography

Mauricio Andre Dubón, a gifted utility player and trailblazer for Honduran major league baseball, was born on July 19, 1994, in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Dubón distinguished himself from an early age, garnering attention from a Christian mission group who saw promise in his talent when he was a mere 15. This led him to leave Honduras for Sacramento, California, to polish his skills while also studying at Capital Christian High School as a foreign exchange student.

While in high school, Dubón honed his baseball talent meticulously. His average of .509 from 169 bat attempts in his junior and senior years, which includes twenty-three doubles, fourteen triples, eight home runs, and eighty-one runs batted in, is indicative of his remarkable talent. Accompanied by this impressive record, he was also recognized by Baseball America for his defensive skill, ranking him as the best among the 2013 Red Sox Draft picks. His draft into professional baseball, by the Boston Red Sox, made him Capital Christian High School’s first-ever alumnus to achieve such remarkable heights.

Dubón had an immediate impact after drafting. Within 20 games, he was promoted to the Lowell Spinners after a remarkable batting average of .245 for the GCL Red Sox. His skill furthered its improvement in Lowell, helping him achieve a .320 batting average over 256 swings. This record ranked him among the top ten in the New York–Penn League.

In 2015, he played for the Greenville Drive, where he achieved a .364 batting average across the first 11 games. The spotlight was firmly on him as he found success in Salem as well, at the High-A Salem Red Sox, and his performance at this level cemented his credentials. In Salem, a repeat of the Greenville drive performance came with a batting average of .288/.349/.376 in 120 games. This resulted in him being named an SAL mid-season All Star in recognition of his remarkable records.

Continuing his surge, Dubón enjoyed a successful stint at Salem again in 2016. Earning a place on the Carolina League All-Star team, he was invited to star in the California-Carolina League All-Star Game. Following this, he was promoted to the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs. At the time of his promotion, he had an impressive .306/.387/.379 line over 238 at-bat records.

Carrying on his form in Double-A, he improved his slash line to .339/.371/.538 over 62 games in Portland. His notable performances include 23 multi-hit games, six home runs, and 40 RBI. He was a Carolina League mid-season All Star, and his stellar performance earned him an invitation to join the Surprise Saguaros of the Arizona Fall League during the postseason.

December 2016 saw Dubón, Travis Shaw, and Josh Pennington traded to the Milwaukee Brewers by the Red Sox in exchange for Tyler Thornburg. The 2017 season took him to Biloxi Shuckers and the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, where he maintained an impressive cumulative average of .274 across both teams, with eight home runs, 57 RBIs, and 38 stolen bases in 129 total games. He was added to the Brewers’ 40-man roster after the season, which further solidified his foothold in professional baseball.

MLB.com recognized Dubón as Milwaukee’s 11th-ranked prospect going into the 2018 season. He continued to impress with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in the 2018 season, maintaining a batting average of .343. In 2019 he played primarily with the San Antonio Missions, batting .297/.333/.475.

In July 2019, Dubón received the greatest news of his career: the Brewers were promoting him to the major leagues. He debuted in the MLB against the Pittsburgh Pirates, becoming only the second Honduran to make it to the MLB, after outfielder Gerald Young.

Later in the month, Dubón was traded to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for Ray Black and Drew Pomeranz. His inaugural hit in Major League arrived on August 29, while stationed at second base for the Giants.

His stints in the 2020 and 2021 seasons with the Giants consolidated his performance from the previous sessions. He had improved on his batting scores and expanded his role in the team.

In May 2022 Dubón was traded to the Houston Astros, where he not only made his mark but also starred in the playoffs. The most significant milestone of his career arrived this year when he became the first-ever Honduran player to participate in the playoffs, leading the Astros to victory in the World Series.

In 2023, he prolonged his contract with the Astros for another year at $1.4 million. In the same year, he made history by becoming the first-ever Honduran to win a Gold Glove award.

Away from the field, Dubón is a practicing Christian who hasn’t forgotten his roots. Back in Honduras, a baseball stadium in Juticalpa, Olancho, is to be named after him in the future. All these achievements clearly depict Mauricio Dub to be an icon for all aspiring baseball players in his homeland Honduras. He continues to make his mark on the international stage, inspiring future generations with his commitment and discipline towards the sport he loves.
