Marco Luciano's Biography

Marco José Luciano, born September 10, 2001, in San Francisco de Macoris, Dominican Republic, is a renowned figure in the world of Major League Baseball (MLB) as a professional baseball shortstop for the San Francisco Giants. Known for his splendid sportsmanship and dedication to the sport, Luciano has become a key player ever since he was signed by the Giants as an international free agent in 2018.

Luciano’s professional journey in MLB debuted in 2023 after an impressive career advancement. His career began when he signed with the San Francisco Giants in July 2018 as an international free agent from his native Dominican Republic. At 16, he basked in the accomplishment of securing a signing bonus of $2.6 million. Unforeseen circumstances called for him to undergo hernia surgery in the subsequent month.

A step into his professional debut with the Arizona League Giants came in 2019. Luciano was influential during his time in the league, notably leading with 46 runs and securing remarkable stats of .322/.438/.616 in 178 at bats, inclusive of 10 home runs, 38 RBIs, and 27 walks. By the season’s end, Luciano was the youngest position player at the age of 17 in the Northwest League. In addition, Luciano participated in the 2021 Arizona Fall League for the Scottsdale Scorpions, being the youngest player in that league. In 2022, Luciano dominated the play for the Giants Black and Eugene, scoring .269/.350/.467 in 227 at-bats with significant achievements of 11 home runs and 36 RBIs. A lower back injury caused him to miss half of the season, which did not keep him from being ranked number 1 in the Giants 2022 MLB Prospect Rankings. To further secure his talents, the Giants added Luciano to their 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft on November 15, 2022.

In the progression of his career, the 2023 season saw Luciano being optioned to the Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels. In 56 games, his score stood at .228/.339/.451 with 11 home runs, 32 RBI, and 6 stolen bases. Upon his promotion to the Triple–A Sacramento River Cats in July 2023, Luciano was called to the major leagues by the Giants for the first time after only six games in Sacramento. The subsequent season in 2024 initiated with Luciano being optioned to Triple–A Sacramento following Nick Ahmed’s acquisition of the starting shortstop job from spring training.
