Justin Verlander

Justin Brooks Verlander, affectionately known as Justin Verlander, was born on February 20, 1983. Currently a professional baseball pitcher for the Houston Astros in Major League Baseball (MLB), Verlander is heralded as one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history. This is explicitly demonstrated in his accolades, such as being a three-time Cy Young Award winner and an AL MVP recipient.

Hailing from Manakin-Sabot, Virginia, Verlander’s love for baseball was apparent from a young age, prompting his father, Richard, to enroll him in The Richmond Baseball Academy. His talent began to show promise in high school, and he has not looked back since.

After high school, he attended Old Dominion University (ODU), where he played college baseball for the Monarchs. At ODU, Verlander left an indelible mark, setting career records for strikeouts at both his university and the Colonial Athletic Association.

In 2003, Verlander was part of the United States national team that bagged a silver medal at the Pan American Games. His performance at the games didn’t go unnoticed. Just a year later, in 2004, the Detroit Tigers selected Verlander as the second overall pick in the MLB draft.

Verlander made his professional debut in the Major League in 2005, joining the Tigers. He would spend 12 years with the Tigers, becoming an integral part of their starting lineup and leading them to four consecutive American League Central Division championships.

In 2017, Verlander transferred to Houston Astros. He made a robust start with the Astros, remaining undefeated in his first five starts. Verlander’s record-breaking streak didn’t end there. In 2018, he became the 114th pitcher to win 200 career wins and the 20th fastest to do so. The following year, he became the sixth MLB player to pitch three career no-hitters and 18th to strike out 3000 batters.

Over the years, Verlander has been selected for the MLB All-Star nine times. He has led in earned run average twice, American League strikeouts five times, and in wins three times. His consistent performance earned him the AL Rookie of the Year award in 2006.

In the 2011 season, he had one of the most successful years of his career. Not only did he pitch his second no-hitter, but he also won the Pitching Triple Crown, AL Cy Young Award unanimously, and the AL Most Valuable Player Award. In 2019, despite suffering a major arm injury that necessitated Tommy John surgery and sidelined him for the next two years, Verlander still managed to win his second Cy Young Award.

By the time he returned to the game in 2022, Verlander had recovered to his best form. He won 18 games in his comeback year and helped the Astros win their second World Series. In the same year, he won his third Cy Young Award, thus earning the distinction of being the first Astro to win multiple Cy Young Awards.

Verlander’s illustrious career has put him on par with the legendary Sandy Koufax, Tim Lincecum, and former teammate Max Scherzer. He has won multiple World Series championships, multiple Cy Young Awards, thrown multiple no-hitters, and earned multiple All-Star selections.

Today, Justin Verlander is not just a name; he is an inspiration. As the active leader in wins and innings pitched, he continues to beast at career highs.
