Jonathan Cannon's Biography

Jonathan Patrick Cannon, commonly known as Jonathan Cannon, was born on July 19, 2000. The Georgia-born athlete is a professional baseball pitcher and is known for his participation in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a part of the Chicago White Sox’s team.

Cannon’s journey in baseball began in his high school years at Centennial High School in Roswell, Georgia. During his senior season in 2019, he excelled with a 4-1 win-loss record and a 0.51 earned run average (ERA), along with a batting average of .368 and two home runs. Despite his exceptional performances, he was overlooked in the 2019 Major League Baseball draft. Consequently, he continued his baseball career at the University of Georgia.

In 2020, during his freshman year at Georgia, Cannon showcased his precision and skill by pitching 11 and 1⁄3 innings. He accomplished 12 strikeouts, only two walks, and gave up no earned runs. Unfortunately, the season came to an abrupt end due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite the setbacks, Cannon remained active in the baseball circuit, joining the Gainesville Braves of the Sunbelt Baseball League during the summer, a team coached by Micah Owings. His 2021 season didn’t start smoothly either, with Cannon sidelined due to mononucleosis. However, he proved his mettle once he returned to the game, appearing in 13 games with 12 starts. He wrapped up the season with a record of 4-2 and a 3.98 ERA, achieving 57 strikeouts and walking 13 over 63 and 1⁄3 innings of play.

Although he was regarded as a top prospect for the 2021 MLB draft, Cannon was passed over once again. Remaining undeterred, he played collegiate summer baseball with the prestigious Orleans Firebirds of the Cape Cod Baseball League after the season.

Just at the brief age of 22, Cannon was appointed as Georgia’s Opening Day starter for the 2022 season. Although he sustained a forearm injury during the season, he managed to start 13 games, with a tally of 9-4 and a 4.02 ERA over 78 and 1⁄3 innings.

Finally, his unwavering dedication and impressive track record caught the Chicago White Sox’s attention, and they selected Cannon in the third round of the 2022 Major League Baseball draft, making him the 101st overall selected player. He subsequently signed with the team for $925,000.

The team assigned Cannon to start his professional journey with the Arizona Complex League White Sox, and he was quickly promoted to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers. In his 7 and 1⁄3 innings of professional debut, he conceded only one run, achieving four strikeouts and three walks.

Cannon’s journey continued with him being assigned to the Winston-Salem Dash at the start of the 2023 season, followed by a promotion to the Birmingham Barons in mid-July. He was chosen to represent the White Sox at the 2023 All-Star Futures Game. In his 25 starts between the two teams, Cannon had a 6-6 record with a 4.46 ERA and 106 strikeouts over 121 innings.

In 2024, he began the season with the Charlotte Knights. On April 16, 2024, he experienced a career milestone when selected for the 40-man roster and promoted to the Major Leagues – a fitting validation of Cannon’s talent and his relentless dedication to the sport he loves.
