Jeffrey Springs

Jeffrey Scott Springs, an American professional baseball player, was born on September 20, 1992. He is renowned in the sport as a proficient pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays, a Major League Baseball (MLB) team. Before his time with the Tampa Bay Rays, Springs positively marked his baseball journey with the Texas Rangers and the Boston Red Sox.

Springs hails from Belmont, North Carolina, where he was educated at South Point High School. Furthering his studies, he attended Appalachian State University, pursuing a management degree while also being involved in college baseball. Between 2012 and 2015, he was a driving force on the baseball team for the Mountaineers.

His dedication and formidable skills were recognized by the Texas Rangers, who drafted him in the 30th round of the 2015 MLB Draft. Subsequently, Springs was awarded a $1,000 signing bonus and a fulfilling career opportunity.

After signing with the Texas Rangers, his career took him to Spokane Indians and Hickory Crawdads, showcasing a 2-2 record and a 2.61 ERA in 31 innings during the split season. Springs’ promising performance was primarily notable in the 2016 season with Hickory Crawdads, registering a 1-1 record and an impressive 1.16 ERA in 18 game encounters. However, his promotion to High Desert Mavericks reiterated the demanding nature of professional baseball, exhibiting a 2-2 record and a 5.36 ERA in 13 games.

During 2017 with the Down East Wood Ducks, his stats pointed to a 2-8 record and a 3.69 ERA on the register. He was entrusted with 146 strikeouts in 112+1⁄3 innings during 31 games, out of which 17 marked him as a start. His 2018 Frisco RoughRiders season bore a 3-2 record and a 4.82 ERA, leading to his promotion to the Round Rock Express. Springs left a lasting imprint with a 1-2 record and a 2.79 ERA.

His soaring profile in the baseball world marked his promotion to the major leagues for the first time on July 31, 2018. His major league debut was marked by his spectacular strikeout of A.J. Pollock. His rookie season boasted an admirable 1-1 record and a 3.38 ERA in 32 major league innings.

Springs’ starting year with the Boston Red Sox in 2020 was not a smooth one, allowing five runs in the fourth game against the New York Mets on July 27. Despite the challenging start, Springs managed to compete in 16 games, though his record remained 0-2 with a 7.08 ERA.

However, Springs’ career took a leap on February 17, 2021, when he was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays alongside Chris Mazza. His first year with the team marked a significant career point, setting a 5-1 record and a commendable 3.43 ERA with 63 strikes in 44+2⁄3 hours. His promising year was halted by an ACL tear in his right knee, resulting in a season-ending surgery and relocation to the 60-day injured list.

Springs returned to the field in 2022 and posted a career-best 2.46 ERA with a 9-5 record with 144 strikeouts in 135+1⁄3 innings. Acknowledging Springs’ exceptional skills and achievements, the Tampa Bay Rays offered him a four-year, $31 million contract extension on January 25, 2023. However, an unforeseen injury to his left arm ulnar neuritis led to Springs’ premature exit from the 2023 season. After careful examination, it was decided that he would undergo Tommy John surgery to effectively treat the injury.

Following a successful surgery and recovery, Springs was activated from the injured list and made a remarkable return to the game on July 28, 2024.
