Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s Biography

Jasrado Prince Hermis Arrington “Jazz” Chisholm Jr., born February 1, 1998, is a Bahamian professional baseball player who occupies the roles of a center fielder and infielder for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB). Prior to his tenure with the Yankees, he gained considerable MLB experience with the Miami Marlins where he started his career in 2020.

Born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas, Chisholm is a global player, having represented the Great Britain national baseball team at an international level. His early interest in baseball was ignited by his grandmother, Patricia Coakley, who was a shortstop for the Bahamian national softball team. Coakley took him under her wing and started teaching him the basics of hitting a baseball when he was just two years old.

Chisholm relocated to the United States when he was 12 years old to pursue serious baseball training at Life Prep Academy in Wichita, Kansas. There, he developed into a versatile athlete, playing not just baseball, but also basketball and football. Upon his high school graduation, he returned to his home country, the Bahamas, to train at a sports academy.

His journey into the professional baseball world started in July 2015 when he signed a $200,000 contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks as an international free agent. The following year, he debuted professionally with the Missoula Osprey, concluding the season with an impressive batting average of .281 and 37 runs batted in (RBIs) spanning 62 games. Unfortunately, Chisholm’s 2017 season with the Kane County Cougars was marred by injuries, but he had a bounce back in 2018 and 2019 with impressive skills and achievements.

July 31, 2019 marked a significant point in Chisholm’s career as he was traded to the Miami Marlins. He ended the year with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp after a robust run of 112 games. Chisholm made his MLB debut in 2020 with the Miami Marlins, and he significantly contributed to the team’s success in various games.

However, 2022 was difficult for Chisholm due to injury problems, leading to him being sidelined for a significant part of the season. Nevertheless, in the 60 games he did play that season, he hit 14 home runs, showing his skill and potential.

In 2023, Chisholm switched his playing position to center field after the Marlins bought Luis Arráez. His batting average was .250, and he scored 51 RBIs, 22 stolen bases, and a career-high of 19 home runs in 97 games. However, an injury required him to undergo surgery, which saw him starting the 2024 season with a salary of $2.6 million.

The Marlins subsequently traded Chisholm to the New York Yankees mid-way into the season on July 27, 2024. Chisholm immediately made a positive impact, setting a new franchise record by hitting four home runs in his first three games. However, a sprained left elbow cut his run short.

On the international scene, Chisholm has represented the Great Britain national baseball team in global tournaments like the 2017 World Baseball Classic qualification, owing to the former colonial ties between the Bahamas and the UK. While he aimed again to represent Great Britain in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, a clash with his MLB commitments prevented this.

Chisholm achieved a notable milestone in 2023 when he was selected as the cover athlete of MLB The Show 23, a popular baseball video game. He was the first ever Marlins player to receive this honor. Despite the ups and downs, Chisholm’s career trajectory in both national and international baseball demonstrates a promising and skilled player who continues to impact the sport tremendously.
