Ian Happ's Biography

Ian Edward Happ, better known today as the professional outfielder for the Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball (MLB), was born on August 12, 1994. This outstanding American baseball player’s journey to becoming one of the finest in the Major Baseball League has a rich tapestry of perseverance, hard work, and undying passion for the sport.

Happ’s love for baseball was nurtured in his hometown of Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, where he attended Mt. Lebanon High School. His outstanding performance during his high school years, including a .449 batting average, 12 home runs, and 65 runs batted in, marked the early stages of what would turn into a promising professional baseball career. Upon graduation, Happ committed to the University of Cincinnati, where he played college baseball for the Cincinnati Bearcats team.

As a freshman at Cincinnati, Happ made an immediate impact, starting in all 56 games with commendable statistics. He held a leading team record with a .322 batting average, .483 slugging percentage, .451 on-base percentage, and six home runs. In his sophomore year, he continued his exceptional performance, hitting .322/.443/.497 with five home runs and 19 stolen bases.

During the summers of his freshman and sophomore years, Happ played collegiate summer baseball for the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League. His outstanding season performances distinguished him as a league all-star during both seasons, and he was inducted into the CCBL Hall of Fame in 2022. All these achievements set the stage for an even more impressive junior season, where he hit .369/.492/.672 with 14 home runs and 44 RBIs.

Such outstanding performances propelled Happ into the spotlight as one of the most promising prospects for the 2015 Major League Baseball draft. The Chicago Cubs recognized his potential and selected him in the first round, making him the ninth overall selection and the 50th player drafted from the Cincinnati Bearcats team.

Upon signing with the Cubs, Happy was sent to the Eugene Emeralds of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League, where he made his professional debut. Over the course of 67 games in two clubs, Eugene and South Bend, he batted .259 with nine home runs and 33 RBIs.

Impressed by his consistently strong performances, the Cubs assigned Happ to the Iowa Cubs of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League in 2017. Here, Happ continued to shine, posting a batting average of .298 with nine home runs and 25 RBIs in 26 games. The outstanding statistics earned him a timely promotion to the major leagues in May of the same year. Happ lived up to expectations in his debut season in the major leagues, hitting 24 home runs and 68 RBIs in 115 games.

In 2018, Happ recorded a unique feat, becoming the second player in MLB history to hit a home run off the first pitch of an MLB season. However, the following year saw him starting at the minor league after a less than par spring training performance. Undeterred, Happ worked to improve his strikeout rate and was recalled to the majors on July 25, 2019.

By 2021, Happ had become a key player for the Chicago Cubs, leading the team with 66 RBIs and setting career highs with 105 hits, 25 home runs, 63 runs scored, and 9 stolen bases. His exceptional performance was rewarded with a $4.1 million salary after winning the arbitration hearing.

In 2022, Happ became a first-time All-Star. He achieved a career highlight by playing 158 games, hitting .271/.342/.440 with 17 home runs and 72 RBIs. The same year, Happ won a Gold Glove Award for his impeccable defense in left field.

Apart from his immensely successful career, Happ has also made significant contributions to Jomboy Media, a digital media company. He invested in the company in 2021 and agreed to host his podcast, The Compound, on the Jomboy Media network.

In his personal life, Happ’s relationship with girlfriend Julie Mazur blossomed, and the couple got engaged in May 2022.
