Griffin Conine's Biography
Griffin Riley Conine, son of former Major League Baseball (MLB) outfielder Jeff Conine, has already carved out an impressive professional baseball career of his own. Born July 11, 1997, in Plantation, Florida, this gifted American athlete plays as an outstanding outfielder for the Miami Marlins in the MLB.
The foundation of Conine’s promising career began at a young age. Having attended Pine Crest High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Conine displayed tremendous sporting talent. In his senior season alone, he boasted an impressive .341 batting average, achieved eight home runs, and tallied 27 runs batted in (RBI).
Despite being selected in the 31st round of the 2015 Major League Baseball draft by the Miami Marlins, young Conine chose instead to further his education and baseball career at Duke University. It was here that he truly started to shine.
During his first season with the Duke Blue Devils, Conine appeared in 35 games and hit a .205 batting average with six RBI. However, it was in his second year with the team that he really displayed the extent of his abilities. Scoring a .298 batting average, 13 home runs, and an impressive 56 RBI. This success marked him as the first Blue Devil to gather more than 50 RBI in a season since Nate Freiman’s achievement in 2009. Additionally, his 13 home runs were a landmark achievement, making him the first Duke player with double-digit home run figures in a season since Jake Lemmerman in 2010.
During his final season at Duke, Conine played in 63 games with a .286 batting average, 18 home runs, and 52 RBI. His sporting prowess off the university pitch was equally impressive. In 2017, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League. Not only was Conine a league all-star but was also named the league’s Outstanding Pro Prospect.
His formidable performances did not go unnoticed. In the second round of the 2018 Major League Baseball draft, he was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays. Less than a month later, on June 20, the talented player signed with a substantial $1.35 million signing bonus. Assigned initially to the Rookie-level Gulf Coast Blue Jays, after only two games, he was promoted to the Short Season-A Vancouver Canadians where he completed the season with a .243 batting average, seven home runs, and 33 RBI in 57 games.
Conine’s entry into professional baseball, however, was not without its hiccups. On November 19, 2018, he was suspended for 50 games following a positive test for a banned stimulant. Undeterred by this setback, Conine stormed back onto the scene for the 2019 season with the Lansing Lugnuts, where he managed a magnificent .283/.371/.576 slash line, with 22 home runs, and 64 RBIs over 80 games.
On August 31, 2020, the Blue Jays formally traded Conine to the Miami Marlins for Jonathan Villar. He did not compete in a minor league game in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, on August 26, 2024, the Miami Marlins promoted Conine to the major leagues – a testament to his relentless perseverance, ambition, and sensational abilities on the field. Griffin Conine’s career, thus far, demonstrates the unwavering potential of this young baseball star, and his growing legacy continues to be one worth watching.
