Freddy Fermin's Biography

Freddy Antonio Fermín, born on May 16, 1995, is a well-known professional baseball catcher hailing from Venezuela. He is currently halfway through his contract with the reputable Major League Baseball (MLB) team, the Kansas City Royals.

Fermín’s professional career in baseball started on July 25, 2015, when he was signed by the Kansas City Royals organization as an international free agent. His decision to sign with them would catapult his career forward, and he embarked on his professional journey.

In the following year, 2016, Fermín made his professional debut in the baseball world with the Dominican Summer League Royals. Over a stretch of 52 matches, he demonstrated his hitting prowess, ending the season with a .273 batting average. His performance was impressive enough to keep fans and critics looking forward to his future games.

In the subsequent year, Fermín played a total of 47 games and represented the rookie-level Idaho Falls Chukars where he had an admirable season performance. His performance resulted in a slash line of .282/.403/.356, illustrating his aptitude for batting. On top of that, he also scored one home run and made 39 RBI, further confirming his promising potential in the MLB.

During the 2018 season, Fermín divided his time between playing for Idaho Falls and the rookie-level Burlington Royals. His cumulative performance resulted in a .249/.346/.350 slash line throughout the season, comprising up of 2 home runs and 19 RBI.

Fermín’s 2019 season was highlighted by splitting the season between the Single-A Lexington Legends and the Double-A Northwest Arkansas Naturals. However, he couldn’t build on that momentum in 2020 due to the minor league season’s cancellation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Undeterred by the setback, Fermín returned to the field in 2021, playing for Northwest Arkansas and the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers. He emerged as a stronger player, having a batting average of .277/.355/.440 along with 10 home runs and 47 RBI from 77 contests. For the beginning of the 2022 MLB season, Fermín was appointed to the Triple-A Omaha team.

A significant milestone in Fermín’s career was reached on July 14, 2022, as his name was added to the prized 40-man roster, and he was called up to the majors for the first time. This opportunity came his way after several other players were put on the restricted list just before a series in Canada against the Toronto Blue Jays. He made his MLB debut the very next day, on July 15, and played in 3 games. Although he wasn’t successful in hitting in his 7 at-bats, this marked the starting of his journey in the majors.

Fermín’s tenure in the 40-man roster was brief, as the teams reshuffled, and he was sent back to Omaha. But it wasn’t long until he was back in action, as the Royals once again chose to include him in the 40-man selection on November 15, 2022. They intended to safeguard him from being swept up in the Rule 5 draft.

In the following year, 2023, Fermín began the season being optioned to Triple-A Omaha. As he moved into the 2024 season, he secured his position as the regular backup catcher for the Royals, showcasing his permanence in the Royals’ strategy and indicating the bright future ahead for Fermín in the Major League Baseball scenes.
