Dansby Swanson's Biography

James Dansby Swanson was born on the 11th of February in the year 1994 in Kennesaw, Georgia – a place known for its rich history and southern charm. The flames of his athletic passion were stoked at an early age by his parents, both former college athletes at Troy University. His mother, Nancy, was once a basketball and tennis player, while his father had a productive career in baseball, which also included a stint as an assistant coach for the Troy Trojans. With this background, Swanson blossomed into an ardent supporter of the Atlanta Braves – his sweat-drenched childhood memories are generously peppered with euphoria-filled moments witnessing the Braves in action at Turner Field.

Swanson was indeed clear about his choice of sport from early on. He honed his skills and athleticism at Marietta High School, where he was a two-sport superstar in the basketball and baseball teams. His exceptional skills in basketball earned him the nickname “Three-point Swanson”; his seniors saw a shooting percentage of 44% from behind the three-point line and he averaged 14 points per game. Simultaneously, he also shone brightly in baseball, thus paving his path to the future.

However, it wasn’t a clear-cut journey for Swanson. Though the Colorado Rockies saw potential and wanted to select him in the 2012 MLB Draft, he decided not to sign and instead joined the Vanderbilt Commodores to play college baseball, despite having recruitment offers from universities such as Troy, Clemson, and Georgia Tech. Swanson had a challenging start, missing most of his freshman season due to injuries. However, he bounced back during his sophomore season, leading the Commodores to their maiden national championship victory, earning him the title of the 2014 College World Series Most Outstanding Player. By 2015, he had switched to a shortstop and received the Brooks Wallace Award, certifying him as the best collegiate baseball player at the position.

His resilient nature and undying spirit attracted the attention of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who selected him first overall in the 2015 MLB Draft. Swanson departed from Vanderbilt and started his professional baseball career with the Diamondbacks, but played just one season in their farm system before being traded to the Atlanta Braves as part of a prospect package to acquire Shelby Miller. His MLB debut came in August 2016, and he was named in the 2017 Opening Day roster as the only Atlanta rookie. However, struggles soon followed, both offensively and defensively, and he was sent back to Triple-A in July following a string of poor performances.

Swanson’s 2018 season was riddled with wrist and hand injuries, with a bruised heel taking him out of action for a month in 2019. However, 2020 saw a return to form – a rejuvenated Swanson set a career-high .274 batting average, and his 49 runs scored were among the top three in MLB. Riding on his encouraging performance, he led the Braves to their first World Series championship since 1995 in 2021. Away from the pitch, Swanson found love in the arms of Mallory Swanson, a professional soccer player for the Chicago Red Stars.
