Casey Schmitt's Biography

Casey Shawn Schmitt, an accomplished American professional baseball infielder, was born on March 1, 1999. Having displayed his extraordinary talent for the game early on, he eventually established himself as an extraordinary third baseman. A native of San Diego, California, Schmitt was destined for the Major Leagues from a young age. He plays for the elite San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball (MLB) and has shown immense promise in his role since making his debut in the League in 2023.

Born to Dan and Tina Schmitt, Casey spent his early years growing up in San Diego. Developing a love for baseball, he honed his skills at the Eastlake High School in Chula Vista, California. As a testament to his talent, he was appointed the captain of his school team in his senior year. He achieved much recognition, being named Perfect Game Underclass High Honorable Mention consecutively in 2015 and 2016, and further being recognized as the Mesa League Athlete of the Year in 2016. His talent and potential as an outfielder were undeniable, as evidenced by his various accolades in 2017 including Rawlings/Perfect Game All-America honorable mention, Perfect Game California All-Region First Team, and the title of the third-best outfielder in California.

Casey proceeded to attend San Diego State University, where his athletic journey continued in earnest. Playing college baseball for the San Diego State Aztecs, Schmitt alternated roles as a relief pitcher and a third baseman. In his debut season, he set an impressive school record with a 0.28 earned run average (ERA), securing nine saves and striking out 24 players in 32 innings pitched. His exceptional performance earned him the Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper First Team All-American freshman honors. Further, he was named the Mountain West Conference Championships Most Valuable Player.

Advancing into his sophomore year, Schmitt continued to impress. He batted an extraordinary .315/.415/.450 in 200 at bats, with an exceptional record of 42 runs, five home runs, and 36 runs batted in (RBIs). Subsequent to his second season, he played collegiate summer baseball for the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League. Not one to be ignored, Schmitt once again shone brightly, securing the title of league all-star and the league’s playoff most valuable player.

By 2020, amidst the global coronavirus pandemic, Schmitt maintained his excellent performance, leading the nation with six saves. He batted a remarkable .323/.386/.452 with four doubles and two triples in just 16 games. His outstanding efforts were acknowledged, earning him a spot in the 2020 All-Mountain West.

One of the milestones of Schmitt’s career was undeniably when he was drafted in the second round of the 2020 Major League Baseball draft by the San Francisco Giants. The Giants, valuing his defense prowess, drafted him with the intent for him to continue as a third baseman.

Schmitt’s professional career truly took off when he played third base for the San Jose Giants of Low-A West for the 2021 season. He left a mark with his performance, batting .247/.318/.406 in 251 at bats, boasting a record of 36 runs, eight home runs, and 29 RBIs. He was on a steady path until sustaining an unexpected season-ending injury when a pitch fractured his left wrist. Yet, his performance before his injury couldn’t be overlooked, earning him the titles of best infield arm and the best defensive infielder in the Giants system by Baseball America.

The 2022 season saw Schmitt moving between the High-A Eugene Emeralds, Double-A Richmond Flying Squirrels, and Triple-A Sacramento River Cats. His performance stayed consistent as he batted .293/.365/.489 in 468 at bats with a notable record of 21 home runs and 78 RBIs. His meritorious play earned him a place as the Pacific Coast League Gold Glove Award winner.

In 2023, climbing up the ranks, Schmitt was assigned to Triple-A Sacramento. He continued to excel, batting .313/.352/.410 with one home run, 22 RBIs, and three stolen bases in the initial 32 games. On May 9, he was selected to the 40-man roster and promoted to the Major Leagues. During his debut, he hit his first major league home run off Patrick Corbin of the Washington Nationals.

Schmitt’s rookie campaign featured a record that put him right next to the legends of the game. He became the first shortstop in the modern era to have three straight multi-hit games to begin his career with each game including at least one extra-base hit. In his debut season, he batted .206/.256/.324 with five home runs and 30 RBI, signaling his successful entrenchment in the Major Leagues. However, at the onset of the 2024 season, he was optioned to Triple–A Sacramento, a testament to his continuous evolution as a player.
