Alejandro Kirk

Alejandro Kirk has been an integral part of the world of Major League Baseball (MLB). Born on November 6, 1998 in Tijuana, Mexico, Alejandro has made a name for himself as a professional baseball catcher for the prestigious team, the Toronto Blue Jays. From a very early age, Alejandro demonstrated an inherent talent for baseball. As early as three, this young boy was picking up baseballs, nurturing a talent that would grow into a lifelong career in the sport. Fandom, for Alejandro, was also a factor in developing his passion. Growing up, he admired Albert Pujols and was an ardent supporter of the St. Louis Cardinals.

The young athlete’s first experience in a team setting came when he joined his Little League team, coached by his father, Juan Manuel, a known amateur player in their local community of Tijuana. Baseball, it seems, runs strong within the Kirk family, as seen in Alejandro’s younger brother Andres, and his elder brother, Juan Manuel Jr., who followed in their father’s footsteps by becoming professional players. Juan Manuel Jr. currently ensnares crowds as the catcher for the Pericos de Puebla.

When Alejandro was around twelve or thirteen, his team found itself in desperate need of a catcher. Encouraged by his father, Alejandro took up the challenge, motivated by his admiration for his older brother who played in the same position. Over time, Alejandro realized that he didn’t just like the position, he loved it. He relished the control that came with being at the center of each game, setting up plays, and communicating with pitchers.

In a turn of fate that could only be regarded as serendipitous, Alejandro caught the attention of Dean Decillis, a scout for the Toronto Blue Jays. Decillis discovered Alejandro at a showcase hosted by the Toros de Tijuana of the Mexican League. Impressed by the young player’s talent, the Blue Jays signed him to their team on September 24th, 2016, even offering him a $7,500 signing bonus. The Toros received $22,500 for his release.

In 2017, Alejandro made his professional baseball debut in a game with the Gulf Coast League Blue Jays. The following season he played with the Bluefield Blue Jays, recording notable statistics with a .354 batting average along with 10 home runs and 57 RBIs in 58 games. His talent was undeniable, and he was quickly rocketed to the Class-A Lansing Lugnuts at the beginning of 2019. His performance earned him a position with the Advanced-A Dunedin Blue Jays, where he closed out his season.

By 2020, Alejandro was slated for a season with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the season, and Alejandro was placed on the team’s taxi squad in September. However, Alejandro was unperturbed and made his MLB debut with the Blue Jays on September 11. He went on to record some impressive achievements including four hits and his first home run in the majors.

Unfortunately, the 2021 season threw some curveballs Alejandro’s way. In May, he was placed on the 60-day injured list for a left hip flexor injury. After a long recovery, Alejandro rejoined the team in July, contributing eight home runs and 24 RBIs in 60 games to the 2021 season.

With renewed vigour, Alejandro fired into the 2022 season, earning the prestigious recognition of an All-Star for the first time in his career. With a batting average of .285, 14 home runs, and 63 RBIs, he closed the season as the Silver Slugger award recipient, an indication of his status as a premier hitter in the league.

Away from the diamond, Alejandro maintains a fulfilling personal life. He and his partner, Sofia, became proud parents with the birth of their daughter in February 2023.
