Aaron Civale's Biography

Born on June 12, 1995, in East Windsor, Connecticut, Aaron James Civale emerged as a talented youth, attending Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor. He began showing promising signs of becoming a professional baseball player early in his life. Whenever he was not in the classroom, you would more than likely find him on the baseball diamond. Civale then progressed to play collegiately at Northeastern University, where he had an illustrious career. He was awarded the Co-Pitcher of the Year in the Colonial Athletic Association after producing stellar statistics of 9–3, alongside a remarkable 1.73 ERA.

During his time at Northeastern, Civale pitched an exhibition game in Florida against the Boston Red Sox. This experience ranked as a milestone in his baseball career, as he transitioned from a relief pitcher in his previous two years to a starting role. This marked the turning point in his career. In 2015, he further honed his skills by participating in the collegiate summer baseball with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod Baseball League. Civale stood out from the rest by becoming a league all-star and winning the Outstanding New England Prospect award.

His consistent performances impressed the Cleveland Indians who selected him during the third round of the 2016 MLB draft. Civale spent 2016 with Mahoning Valley Scrappers, then advanced to Lake County Captains and Lynchburg Hillcats in 2017, posting a combined 13–6 record with a 3.28 ERA. In 2018, he pitched with the Akron RubberDucks, developing his potential even further. He started 2019 with Akron before getting promoted to Columbus Clippers.

As he continued to excel, on June 21, 2019, the Cleveland Indians selected his contract, granting him the chance to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a professional MLB player. His debut was memorable as he made 6 strikes against the Detroit Tigers, winning the match with a 2–0 score. He continued his successful run by allowing only 2 or fewer runs in each of his first six career starts, a remarkable feat never accomplished by any Indian’s pitcher since 1908.

However, in 2020, he faced a bit of a tumultuous year with a 4–6 status and a 4.74 ERA. Despite struggling, he led the AL in hits allowed (82) and highest batting average against (.282). Unfortunately, a middle finger sprain led to his placement on the injured list on June 23, 2021. At that time, he led MLB in wins with 10. Regardless of being moved to the 60-day injured list, he bounced back in September. Further, he marked the end of Cleveland’s tenure under their Indians name by delivering six scoreless innings and securing the win against the Texas Rangers.

Civale’s tenacity attracted the Tampa Bay Rays, who traded him for infield prospect Kyle Manzardo. Despite a rough tenure with the Rays, Civale managed to secure a one-year deal worth $4.9 million for 2024. However, mid-season, Civale was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for Gregory Barrios.

Throughout his journey, whether playing for the Cleveland Indians, Tampa Bay Rays, or the Milwaukee Brewers, Civale has always displayed resilience and the ability to rebound from adversity.
