Born in Ruston, Louisiana, William Miles Sheppard was introduced to the sport of football at an early age and attended Mandeville High School, where his future as a phenomenal wide receiver started taking shape. Sheppard’s high school career was nothing short of impressive. He snagged 126 receptions for 2,252 yards and 33 touchdowns, earning recognition and a promising future. His passion and dedication drove him to commit to playing college football at Vanderbilt University.
In Sheppard’s freshman season with the Commodores in 2020, he introduced his capabilities to the world by catching two passes for a total of 30 yards. However, his true potential didn’t truly shine through until the fifth week of his sophomore season in 2021. In a game against UConn, Sheppard had a breakout performance, catching eight passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns, providing vital contributions to Vanderbilt’s 30-28 win.
The 2021 season was a significant turning point in Sheppard’s college football career. He hauled in 43 receptions for 577 yards and four touchdowns, proving his remarkable abilities on the football field. Sheppard continued his stunning performance into the 2022 season, elevating his play even further. In week three, he recorded ten receptions for 171 yards and two touchdowns, playing a crucial role in the Commodores’ victory over Northern Illinois.
Sheppard ended the 2022 season with a remarkable tally of 60 receptions for 776 yards and nine touchdowns. His brilliant contributions earned him the prestigious title of second-team All-SEC by the Associated Press. His successful trajectory didn’t stop there as he was named to the preseason second-team All-SEC for the following year.
Going into the 2023 season, Sheppard raised expectations further by being named to the watch list for the Fred Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver. This recognition came due to Sheppard’s remarkable touchdown record from the previous season for Vanderbilt and being ranked second in receiving touchdowns in the SEC.
Keeping the momentum from his previous seasons, Sheppard kicked off the 2023 season with an impressive performance. In week zero, he recorded six passes for 68 yards and two touchdowns, helping Vanderbilt snatch a win against Hawaii with a final score of 35–28. With his consistent record and skyrocketing career, Sheppard is projected to be picked in the 2024 NFL Draft.
In a surprising turn of events on December 3, 2023, Sheppard announced he would be entering the transfer portal. After 11 days with rumors and anticipation swirling, he confirmed on December 14, 2023, that he would be transferring to the Colorado Buffaloes. Regardless of the change, Sheppard has continued showcasing his talents as one of the most promising wide receivers in American college football.
