Tyler Shough's Biography
Tyler Shough, an American college football quarterback, was born on the 28th of September, 1999. He currently plays for the Louisville Cardinals. Before this, he had a progressive career in which he spent the years 2018 to 2020 playing for the Oregon Ducks and 2021-2023 representing Texas Tech. Shough was born in Chandler, Arizona, the fourth child in a family of five comprising his parents Glenn and Dana Shough, and his siblings. His parents who are both retirees had their love story start as students back at the Arizona State University. Dana, his mother, was once an educator while Glenn, his father, was a former police officer. Glenn currently devotes his time to teaching criminal justice and providing driver’s education. Dana was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer back in 2009.
Tyler Shough, along with his younger brother Brady, followed on the same track as their elder sisters by enrolling in Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona’s football program. Remarkably, Cody Bellinger, a future Major League Baseball player, was one of his friends during the period he spent at Hamilton. The football years in Hamilton High School turned out eventful, with Shough being recognized as the starting varsity quarterback in his junior year, 2016. His performance ensured he got an honorable mention in the Arizona’s 6A Premier League, recognized as the 6th toughest football regions in the nation. However, the team ended that season with a disappointing record, rendering it the worst in the school’s history.
Shough’s high school years were not only filled with triumphs as he experienced controversies, such as allegations of hazing in 2017. The incident led to three administrators getting reassigned and three players convicted. However, Shough was not involved in the scandal. That year, his team advanced to the 6A state quarterfinals, earning him a first-team 6A Premier League and all-CUSD awards. He was recognized as a Semper Fidelis All-American with the US Marine Corps. Despite, what the records displayed as a loss, Shough achieved personal milestones by setting school records for most losses, completions, attempts, yards, and touchdowns in the 20-year history of the school’s football program.
When it came to football, Shough was a prospect many teams wanted to have. He was widely recognized as a pro-style quarterback. He was ranked the 16th best quarterback, and 183rd best player overall nationwide by Scout. Athletic scholarship offers came from universities such as Alabama, California, Georgia, Florida State, Michigan, South Carolina, and Indiana amongst others. Although he first gave a verbal commitment to North Carolina in June 2017, he nevertheless signed an early letter of intent to the University of Oregon in December of 2018.
Shough played only three games covering eighteen snaps before he redshirted for the rest of the 2018 season. The 2019 season saw him serve as the Ducks’ backup quarterback, during which he played a total of eight games off the bench. Following the advancement of Justin Herbert to the National Football League (NFL), Shough was named the starting quarterback in 2020. He had an impressive win in the season opener against Stanford, with a score line of 35–14.
However, things took a downturn as the Oregon team suffered back-to-back losses against Oregon State and California. Shough’s performance was questioned, but despite the losses, Oregon managed to make it to the Pac-12 championship. As the season rolled by, Shough began sharing offensive series with Boston College transfer Anthony Brown. They were selected to participate in the Fiesta Bowl, but the loss to Iowa State and Brown’s impressive performance raised doubts about Shough’s position in the team. In early 2021, Shough transferred to Texas Tech University. After a competition for the starting quarterback position, it was announced in August 2021 that Shough was the team’s week one starter. In his first start for the team, he led Texas Tech to a 38–21 victory. However, the 2021 season came with its share of tribulations as he broke his collarbone during the 4th week of play.
Shough’s transfer to the University of Louisville was announced on December 5, 2023, making it the latest step in his fluctuating college football career. Off the football field, Shough is well-grounded in his Christian faith, with him and his teammate, Mycah Pittman, getting baptized in 2019. Tyler Shough’s tale, filled with triumphs and tribulations, is a testament to resilience, as he continues to evolve and achieve in the world of college football.
