Terry Lockett's Biography

Tyler Deron Lockett, born on September 28, 1992, is an accomplished American football player who is currently a wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks, a team in the National Football League (NFL). Lockett was drafted to the Seahawks in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft following a significantly decorated career in college football with the Kansas State Wildcats.

At Kansas State, Lockett set a number of records, including a total of 6,586 career all-purpose yards, 35 touchdowns, and over 3,710 yards and 29 touchdowns as a receiver. Despite a promising start to his freshman season in 2011, leading the nation in average yards per kickoff return, an injury caused him to miss the rest of the season. Still, his performances were recognized, and he was selected as an All-American return specialist.

Subsequent performances were equally noteworthy. In 2012, he was an honorable mention All-Big 12 Conference player, and in 2013, a first team player for both wide receiver and all-purpose receiver positions. Lockett even set new Kansas State school records for single-game receiving yards, all-purpose yards, and career kickoff return yards.

As a senior in the 2014 team, Lockett managed to surpass his father’s records for career receptions, receiving touchdowns, and receiving yards, earning himself the position of Big 12 Conference leader in receiving yards and punt return average.

On joining the NFL, Lockett’s success continued. He was the NFC Special Teams Player of the Month for September 2015 and became the second rookie in the history of the NFL to win multiple Special Teams Player of the Month awards.

The player was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Nicole Edwards and Kevin Lockett, a former NFL player who also played at Kansas State from 1993 to 1996. Tyler’s uncle Aaron was also an NFL player and his younger brother Sterling committed to Kansas State for their 2022 recruitment class.

Lockett’s education background includes attending Barnard Elementary, Carver Middle School, and Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa. During his time at Booker T. Washington high school, he led the school to victories in the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) championships in both football and basketball. Despite being a star in multiple sports- football, basketball, and track and field, his focus was always football.

In addition to football, Lockett was a top competitor in basketball and track. In basketball, his team reached the state championship game, and in track & field, Lockett earned several regional titles. Coming out of high school, he was considered a three-star recruit and was ranked the number 16 player in Oklahoma and 170 in the nation.

Once at Kansas State University on an athletic scholarship, he proved his skills on the field playing for coach Bill Snyder’s Wildcats football team from 2011 to 2014. During these years, he established himself as a significant player, receiving numerous awards, including being named Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year, a second-team All-Big 12 selection, and a consensus All-American by the NCAA.

Even with these accomplishments, Lockett remained dedicated to his studies. In 2013, he was named a 2013 Allstate/American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team nominee and received a second team Academic All-Big 12 selection in 2012.

By his senior year, he was already a preseason All-Big 12 selection and a candidate for the Walter Camp Award, Maxwell Award, Paul Hornung Award, and Biletnikoff Award. His performances were so outstanding that he was named one of 62 FBS semifinalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy, often referred to as the “Academic Heisman”.

Reflecting on Tyler Deron Lockett’s journey, it is clear that his myriad of achievements in football are not just a result of his physical prowess, but also his tenacity, discipline, and relentless ambition.
