Omarion Hampton, born on March 16, 2003, is a dynamic American football player who has made significant strides in his football career as a running back for the North Carolina Tar Heels. Hampton’s position is not just a random selection, but a passion that has been nurtured from his high school days.

His birthplace was Clayton, North Carolina, where his football journey began. Hampton’s talent in football was first discovered at Cleveland High School, and he was instrumental to the team from 2018 to 2021. Even in his freshman year, Hampton displayed exceptional talent by rushing for 335 yards.

In the following year, Hampton reached the top of his game in 2019 as a sophomore, when he emerged as one of the best running backs on national scale. It was an extraordinary season for him, as he clocked 2,402 rushing yards and 35 touchdowns. Remarkably, he ran for over 100 yards in all their games except one.

In the spring season of 2021, although a junior, Hampton dramatically ran for 685 yards, earning 13 touchdowns. However, his season was marred by an injury that kept him off the field for a significant amount of time, but this setback did not dim his football spirit.

The subsequent year brought forth a more seasoned Omarion Hampton. As a senior, he ran with flair, covering an overwhelming 1,949 yards and making an impressive tally of 39 touchdowns. His admirable performance saw Cleveland attain an 11-1 record in state playoffs. Due to this remarkable achievement, Hampton was named the Gatorade North Carolina Football Player of the Year and also bagged the state’s Mr. Football award.

His reputation as a star player was acknowledged when he was classified as a four-star recruit and later committed to playing college football for the North Carolina Tar Heels. Hampton’s freshman year in 2022 saw him claim 101 rushing yards and two touchdowns in his first collegiate match. His promising debut saw him become a record breaker, as the first true freshman for North Carolina to attain over 100 yards in a single game since 1946.

Two games later, Hampton yet again displayed an exhibition of his skills by running for 110 yards, scoring game tying and go-ahead touchdowns against the Georgia State Panthers. His performance earned him the Rookie of the Week award from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Hampton rounded off the season by playing 13 games, starting in four, amassing 401 yards to his name from 88 rush attempts, netting six touchdowns. On top of that, he successfully made six receptions for 40 yards and another score.

In the 2023 season, Hampton’s streak of brilliance was further recognized when he ran 26 times for 234 yards against Appalachian State in the second game of the season. This eye-catching performance earned him the Doak Walker National Running Back of the Week. Displaying consistency throughout the season, Hampton ended with a total of 1,504 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns.

His impressive figures were acknowledged with a first-team All-ACC plaque and a finalist position for the Doak Walker award. Add to this distinction, a place in several All-America teams, including the second team of the AP and Sporting News, and the first team by Walter Camp Football Foundation. By the end of the season, his impressive performance against West Virginia in Duke’s Mayo Bowl saw him surpass Elijah Hood’s record to be the second highest in single Tar Heel season rushing yards.
