Mekhi Mews's Biography
Mekhi Patrick Mews has earned a name for himself in American football as a wide receiver, with promising performances with the Houston Cougars and a prior stint with the Georgia Bulldogs. Born and raised in Lawrenceville, Georgia, Mews’ journey to becoming an admired football athlete is one of determination, talent, and relentless pursuit of opportunities.
Mews’ love for the game took root in his early years at Central Gwinnett High School, Lawrenceville. Showcasing an immense talent for football, he proved to be a pivotal force on the team. In his senior year, he put forward an enthralling performance, amassing an impressive 1,522 yards and scoring not one or two, but eleven touchdowns.
With such a remarkable high school career, Mews had several college football opportunities knocking at his door, including scholarship offers from Tennessee Tech and Savannah State. However, demonstrating a grit and spirit unique to him, he made the decision to walk-on as a college football player at the University of Georgia. This decision proved to be a milestone in his path, propelling him closer to his dream.
Although Mews’ first two seasons at the University of Georgia saw limited play, he redshirted in 2021 and his perseverance never waned. His breakthrough came in the 2023 season opener against UT Martin, where he made three impressive catches that totaled 75 yards, which included an astounding 54-yard pass from Carson Beck. His performance was a testament to his growing prowess on the football field.
The following week against Ball State saw Mews solidifying his reputation as a top-tier player. He returned a punt with breathtaking 69 yards for a touchdown, becoming the hero of the game that ended in a comprehensive 45–3 victory for Georgia. Significantly, Mews’ touchdown by punt-return was the first one for Georgia in an unbelievable span of 14 years. He concluded the remarkable season with 13 receptions for 155 yards and a touchdown.
But as the career trajectory of an athlete often goes, Mews found himself looking for new opportunities in December 2023 and made the decision to enter the transfer portal. It was not long before the talented wide receiver found a new flag to carry. On January 10, 2024, he announced that he was transferring to the University of Houston, ready to add to the prestige of the Houston Cougars.
Besides his persona as an exceptional athlete, Mews is also well-known for his playful nickname, “Waffle House”, a tribute from Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo. The nickname was born out of the notion that Mews, like the popular restaurant chain, is “always open.”
Mews’ journey in Football is a testament to his incredible talents and dedication. Having made a mark at both the University of Georgia and University of Houston, Mews has certainly carved his name with pride and diligence into the history of American college football. Each catch, each touchdown, and each victory stand testament to the determination, talent, and true grit of Mekhi Patrick Mews.
