The 2023 BYU Cougars football team stands as a testament to Brigham Young University’s commitment to athletic excellence. As a member of the Big 12 Conference in the 2023 NCAA Division I FBS football season, the Cougars demonstrated outstanding performance, both on and off the field. The team was exceptionally led by their eighth-year head coach, Kalani Sitake, who guided his players with a steady hand and discerning eye. Former NFL player and Polynesian football legend, Sione Pouha, was brought on board as a defensive assistant coach in a move announced on December 20, 2022. The final shift in the coaching staff came on January 2, 2023, with the news that Kevin Clune would not be returning to the team. The vacant defensive assistant coaching position was subsequently filled by Justin Ena, a former BYU player who shared coaching history with Hill.
The Cougars’ 2023 season officially kicked off at their home ground against former FCS team Sam Houston State, who was transitioning to FBS. BYU was the clear favorite as they opened with an impressive 8 play, 50-yard drive that ended with a 5-yard touchdown run by Kedon Slovis. The game continued with two scoreless quarters before the Cougars reaffirmed their dominance with an impressive 11-play, 55-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter. BYU sealed their victory with their first-ever game against Sam Houston State, setting the final score at 14-0.
