With a legacy of athletic excellence dating back to its inception, the Florida State Seminoles football team have a spot well secured in the annals of collegiate sporting history. The 2023 season was a particularly stirring time for the Seminoles, as they represented Florida State University in the NCAA Division I FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) football season as part of the robust Atlantic Coast Conference.

Guiding the Seminoles through the 2023 season was Mike Norvell, a dedicated individual at the helm of the team’s coaching staff. This marked Norvell’s fourth year as their head coach, a tenure characterized by an unwavering commitment to the prosperity of the team and the sport as a whole. An integral part of Florida State’s football tradition is its residence at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida, where the Seminoles hosted their home games that season.

The team rolled into the 2023 season on a high wave of momentum following a successful 2022 season. The accolades notwithstanding, there was controversy looming around the corner. Despite finishing the season with a perfect record of 13 wins and no losses, the Seminoles found themselves in position five of the final College Football Playoff rankings. This overlooked a previously undefeated Power Five conference team in favor of the 12-1 Southeastern Conference champions Alabama and Big 12 Conference champions Texas. In a critical move, the Selection Committee cited the season-ending injury of Jordan Travis as the decisive factor in their exclusion from the playoffs.

The season concluded with the Seminoles invited to the Orange Bowl, where they faced off against the daunting Georgia Bulldogs. After several player opt-outs and transfers, the Seminoles experienced the largest loss in bowl history. The disappointment from this exclusion led to the university’s board of trustees initiating legal action against the ACC, challenging the conference’s Grant of Rights.

The 2023 season was further notable due to it being the first since 2004 where the conference’s scheduling format included only one division. On a brighter note, the season saw several Seminoles players advancing their football careers beyond the college level. Defensive End Jared Verse was drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft along with nine other Seminoles being selected in the overall draft. Additionally, three other Seminoles players found their way into the sports industry as undrafted free agents.
