Kyron Drones’ journey from high school football to acclaim in high-profile university teams forms the fascinating trajectory of an athlete determined to stand his ground on the gridiron.

Drones’ football journey began at Shadow Creek High School, where he exhibited an instinctive ability to excel as a quarterback. With every pass, he demonstrated precision and control, managing 314 successful completions out of 559 attempts. His high school career saw him garnering a jaw-dropping 5,257 yards and 71 touchdowns, an astonishing feat that overshadowed a mere 17 interceptions. Consequently, Drones’ exceptional exploits on the football field during his high school career were noticed by many prestigious college football programs. Drones chose Baylor over several other renowned schools, including Auburn, Ole Miss, TCU, and Pittsburgh.

As a freshman at Baylor University, Drones was redshirted and did not see any game action, demonstrating a strategic move to preserve his eligibility for future play. Despite being side-lined, Drones used this period to grow, not just as an athlete, but as a football strategist, honing his skills for the time when he would ultimately step onto the field.

In his sophomore year in 2022, Drones showcased his abilities on the football battlefield. With 219 yards earned and a touchdown to his credit in the passing realm, and an interception notwithstanding, Drones’ rushing saw him conquering 49 yards and retreating to the end zone twice, further evidencing his athletic versatility.

However, a major turning point in Kyron’s football career unfolded at the conclusion of the 2022 season. Drones decided to take advantage of the NCAA’s transfer rules by entering the portal, a decision that eventually led him to become a valuable recruit for the Virginia Tech Hokies.

At Virginia Tech, Drones’ debut in 2023 as the starting quarterback came in the third week of the season. Despite losing to Rutgers, Kyron’s performance – 19 successful completions out of 32 attempts, gaining 190 yards and a touchdown along with 74 yards from rushing – was filled with promise. In the ensuing week, Drones once again started as the quarterback, completing 19 of 35 passes for a gain of 160 yards and rushing for another 75 yards, culminating in two touchdowns, even though the Hokies had to concede defeat to Marshall.

As of now, in 2023, it is noteworthy that Kyron is not the only member of the Drones family making strides on the football field. His cousin, Cam Ward, continues to leave a mark in the sport as a quarterback for the Miami Hurricanes.

The culmination of Drones’ inaugural year at Virginia Tech came about when he was decreed the MVP of the 2023 Military Bowl, a clear demonstration of his significant progress over just a few years.
