Gevani McCoy, an iconic name in the American Football community, was born and raised in the serene neighborhood of Baldwin Hills, California. He kick-started his sports journey with his enrolment at Lakewood High School, where he showcased a promising glimpse of his football skills. A dynamic quarterback, he recorded an impressive tally of 830 yards with seven touchdowns, all while only being a sophomore. As his skill and control on the field grew, so did his statistics. In his junior year, he recorded a whopping 1,569 yards and 14 touchdowns, performing a commendable 117 rushes which led to 721 yards and 12 more touchdowns.
Just before he began his senior year, McCoy transferred to Lawndale High School. It was during this pivotal phase of his junior year that he committed to play college football for Idaho. This opportunity, which was his one and only scholarship offer, played an instrumental role in shaping his football career.
The year 2021 became significant for McCoy, as it marked the beginning of his journey with the Idaho Vandals. He participated in three hard-fought games before redshirting the season, exhibiting his potential by throwing for 205 yards and a touchdown. Leading up to the redshirt freshman season in 2022, he was rightfully named the Vandals’ starting quarterback. Despite initial plans by new head coach Jason Eck, to move McCoy to cornerback during offseason practices, the decision to keep him as quarterback seemed to pay off well.
McCoy’s freshman season marked an unprecedented escalation in his career graph. He successfully completed 204 of 298 passes for a splendid 2,719 yards, which included 27 touchdown passes and only seven interceptions. Aside from performing excellently as a quarterback, he also infused versatility into his game by rushing for three touchdowns. Recognizing the impressive track record he had built in such a short period, he was honored as the Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year. Additionally, he was given the third-team All-Big Sky accolade, further solidifying his stature in Football Championship Subdivision.
