He was born and raised in Boonville, Indiana, where he showed great promise as a player during his high school years at Boonville High School. During his high school season, Mockobee showcased an impeccable gaming streak, racking up 3,568 yards and 45 touchdowns in his run.
Demonstrating his versatility on the field, Mockobee executed 21 passes that accumulated an impressive 357 yards, resulting in three touchdowns. In addition, he excelled as a defensive back, making 119 tackles with two of these leading to a loss, as well as two sacks, 13 pass deflections, five fumble recoveries, and four interceptions.
In his senior season, Mockobee gave a career-best performance against Gibson Southern. He rushed for an extraordinary 415 yards by carrying the ball 27 times and scored five touchdowns, despite the team facing a 43-35 loss.
Originally, Mockobee intended to pursue college football at Navy. However, he changed his plan and opted to explore opportunities at Purdue University. Here, he embraced his role as a running back and started making significant contributions to the Boilermakers’ performance.
Debuting at Purdue’s home game in 2022, his early career was marked by an impressive performance where he rushed for 78 yards and brought in his first touchdown, enabling a clear 56-0 victory against Indiana State. In their fifth-week play, wherein he rushed for 112 yards and made a touchdown, proved to be his breakout game which enabled Purdue to clinch an upset victory against Minnesota at 20-10.
His high stakes performance continued into the seventh week, where, during the game against Nebraska, he rushed for 178 yards and scored another touchdown, leading to a 43-37 win. His outstanding performance in this game saw him set a school record for most rushing yards by a freshman. Mockobee’s impressive game landed him the title of the B1G Freshman of the Week.
In their ninth-week matchup, Mockobee continued to exhibit his stellar skills by rushing for 106 yards from 28 carries and making a touchdown. This spirited play was instrumental in Purdue’s win against #21 Illinois and helped the team become bowl eligible. During Purdue’s season finale, Mockobee proved invaluable, making a significant contribution by rushing for 99 yards and a touchdown in a 30-16 win against the rival team, Indiana. This victory also pushed Purdue closer to the Big Ten Championship.
Another commendable performance by Mockobee was delivered in the Big Ten Championship game, where he had Purdue’s first touchdown, thus tying the game at 7-7. He wrapped out the season with 968 yards and nine touchdowns, along with 32 receptions for 274 yards to his credit. He further etched his name in Purdue’s record books by setting the school record for the most rushing yards by a freshman.
Following this phenomenal season, the newly appointed head coach, Ryan Walters, recognized Mockobee’s talent and awarded him a scholarship.
