Chris Long's Biography

Christopher Howard Long (born March 28, 1985) is a retired professional American Football player celebrated for a career marked by impressive athletic feats, leadership skills, and exceptional philanthropy off the field. Born in Santa Monica, California to Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Howie Long, Chris was born into his legacy alongside younger brothers Kyle Long, also an accomplished NFL player, and Howie Long Jr., who pursued a career in football administration with the Las Vegas Raiders. As Howie Long’s oldest son, Chris is also the godson of celebrated quarterback and fellow Hall of Fame inductee Terry Bradshaw, adding to his impressive football lineage. He is a great-nephew of noted filmmaker Irvin Kershner.

From 2004 to 2007, Long attended the University of Virginia playing collegiate football under Head Coach Al Groh and majoring in Sociology. Starting as a backup defensive lineman as a freshman, he grew into an integral part of the Virginia football program, earning the Ted Hendricks Award as a senior, bestowed upon the most outstanding defensive end in the nation. Despite never completing his degree, his undeniable impact was commemorated when his #91 jersey was retired, making him the first player to receive this honor while still actively playing.

In 2008, Long was selected second overall in the NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams, marking the beginning of an illustrious professional career. His debut season marked him as a promising talent as he quickly started making his mark in the league. This gesture, among other philanthropic endeavours, earned him the prestigious Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 2018. After the 2018 season, Long announced his retirement from professional football, marking the end of an 11-season-long career filled with numerous awards, accolades, and two Super Bowl rings. Transitioning into the next phase of his career, Long has since become host of the Green Light Podcast, where he offers commentary from a player’s perspective and interviews an array of public figures, from musicians and celebrities to fellow athletes.
