This astoundingly commendable performance significantly contributed to the Hilltoppers’ edge-of-the-seat, comeback overtime victory over the Old Dominion Monarchs.
Throughout the 2023 season, Veltkamp continued his euphoric trail of success. He completed 41 of his 54 pass attempts equating to 387 yards, resulting in five touchdowns, alongside one interception. Not limiting his skills to passing, Veltkamp exhibited his remarkable running abilities, adding 76 yards on the ground.
Life on the pitch considerably altered for Veltkamp in the third week of the 2024 season. As the team starter, T.J. Finley, was injured during the first quarter of a match, the team found their new savior in Veltkamp. Coming in for relief, he remarkably completed 27 of his 30 pass attempts for a whopping 398 yards and five touchdowns, contributing significantly to Western Kentucky’s victory over Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders. He also demonstrated his running prowess by contributing a ground touchdown to the game.
Veltkamp’s impressive performance against Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders did not go unrecognized. Simultaneously bestowed with the titles of the Conference USA offensive player of the week and the Davey O’Brien Award’s Great 8 list for Week 3, he also bagged the Manning Award Star of the Week.
Propelled by his increasing recognition and consistent performance, Veltkamp began the fourth week of the season as the team’s starting quarterback, all set for his first career start. Right from the initiation of the game, Veltkamp remarkably ruled the field. Effortlessly and accurately completing 20 of his 30 passing attempts for 242 yards, he scored a touchdown. Displaying his diverse skill set, Veltkamp also rushed two touchdowns on the ground, driving the Hilltoppers to a thrilling comeback victory over the Toledo Rockets.
