Bryson Washington's Biography

Bryson A. Spinner, born on November 7, 1980, is distinguished for his career as an American football quarterback. This talented athlete embarked on his professional career when he became a free agent, signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars subsequent to the 2004 NFL draft.

Before becoming a national figure, Spinner’s journey began in Gar-Field Senior High School, Woodbridge, Virginia, where he emerged as the starting quarterback during his freshman season. However, in the spring of 1996, he moved to Episcopal High School, located in Alexandria, Virginia.

During his tenure at Episcopal High School, Spinner displayed exceptional athleticism, earning letters in football, basketball, and track over three years. He served as the Senior Captain for all three sports. Not only did he contribute significantly to the basketball team’s triumphant achievement of three state championships, but he was also named the Most Valued Player for three consecutive years.

In his final year of high school, Spinner delivered an impressive performance on the football field, throwing for 1388 yards and achieving 16 touchdowns. He also ran for 888 yards, resulting in an additional 21 touchdowns. His leadership paved the way to an undefeated season with a 9-0 record. As recognition of his skills, he received titles such as first-team All-League, All-District, All-Met, and IAC first-team in both basketball and football. His biggest recognition came when The Washington Post named Spinner as the number one quarterback in Virginia in his senior year and ranked him as the 12th best in the nation.

After high school, in 1999 Spinner began his college football journey at the University of Virginia. He redshirted his freshman year, and his prospects rose in 2000 when he became the starting quarterback following an injury to Dan Ellis. Following the 2000 season, the university’s coach George Welsh retired and was succeeded by Al Groh. At this point, Spinner started to share quarterbacking duties with Matt Schaub. Spinner’s standout performance led the team to 5–1 in games he started.

A major shift occurred in Spinner’s career before the start of the 2002 season when he transferred to the University of Richmond Spiders, under the leadership of coach Jim Reid. Having undergone surgery, Spinner made a return in 2003.

Arguably, Spinner’s most noteworthy performance occurred in the 2001 39–38 victory over Georgia Tech while he was still at the University of Virginia. He completed 32 out of 46 passes, making a season-high of 327 yards and five touchdowns, further underscoring his football prowess.

Before transitioning to coaching, Spinner expanded his professional football career by signing as a free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2004. However, he was later released before the start of the 2004 season. Subsequent to this, he was signed by the Seattle Seahawks and again, released before the start of the season.

By 2005, Spinner signed with the Washington Redskins where he engaged in a training camp but, once again, was released before the season opener. His journey went international in January 2006 when he signed with the San Francisco 49ers and was allocated to the Frankfurt Galaxy in NFL Europa. Under Spinner’s leaderships, the Galaxy won World Bowl XIV.

Following an injured shoulder in the World Bowl, Spinner served as the starting quarterback for the Maryland Maniacs in the Indoor Football League for the 2009 season. The team had an excellent season, winning the Atlantic Division championship. Unfortunately, they lost their playoff game. By 2010, Spinner was reported to return to the Maryland Maniacs for their new season.

Post his vibrant career as a player, Spinner made a return to Episcopal High School in 2007, where he engaged as a coach for quarterbacks and defensive ends. Thus, Spinner’s journey into sports is marked by his resilient determination, prolific performances, and immense contributions even as he shifted gears from being a player to a coach.
