BIOGRAPHY

The Navy Midshipmen football team of 2024 marked a significant chapter in the chronicles of the United States Naval Academy’s sporting journey. Representing the United States in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) during the 2024 NCAA Division I FBS football season, the Midshipmen showcased steel, skill, and strategic grace on the field.

At the helm of the team stood Brian Newberry – a leader who brought a distinct vigor and vision to the role of a coach. Having taken up the position a year ago, Newberry accomplished remarkable feats in his second year as the head coach. The Midshipmen found their fortress at the Navy–Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, situated in Annapolis, Maryland where they displayed thrilling home games.

The AAC unfurled its media prediction poll on July 23, 2024, and the forecasts created a unique paradigm for the Midshipmen. They were projected to close the lid at the eleventh position in the conference, a prediction that ignited a monumental quest for surpassing expectations.

Their campaign witnessed a few landmark performances. A notable standout was Blake Horvath’s spellbinding game day where he completed 9 of 11 passes for a colossal 225 yards inclusive of two touchdowns. That wasn’t it – he also scored through 4 rushing touchdowns totaling 211 yards. With his striking performance, Horvath established himself as the first quarterback since Malcolm Perry to tally six or more total touchdowns in a game – a feat Perry achieved against ECU in 2019.

One of the Midshipmen who etched his name in the annals of the academy’s history is Eli Heidenreich. Heidenreich achieved a rare dual feat, rushing for 100 yards and earning 100 receiving yards in a single game. He ran for an exact 100 yards and made five receptions amounting to 101 yards. This splendid achievement also helped Navy record two 200-yard rushers and a 100-yard receiver in a single game – a milestone last witnessed in the 2003 season.

The campaign of the Midshipmen of 2024 also saw an array of venues including the Protective Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama; Falcon Stadium in Colorado Springs, Colorado; MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey; Rice Stadium in Houston, Texas; Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida; Dowdy–Ficklen Stadium in Greenville, North Carolina; and Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland.

Through stirring performances and sheer determination, the 2024 Navy Midshipmen football team embellished the sporting legacy of the Naval Academy, giving a spirited account of their journey in the American Athletic Conference during the 2024 NCAA Division I FBS football season.
