Behren Morton is a renowned American football quarterback, born on the 17th of January, 2002. With a passion for the game ingrained deep within him, Morton journeyed all the way from the fields of Eastland, Texas, to the top tier of college football, where he now plays for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. A strong team spirit and friendship ties were the backdrop of Morton’s early life in Eastland, as his father, a vital influencer in his football career, served as the head coach of his school’s football team at Eastland High School.
Under his father’s tutelage and through sheer determination, Morton pushed boundaries and shattered expectations by leading the school’s Mavericks team as the starting quarterback, a position he stepped into as a mere freshman. His contributions to the team were remarkable, and he rode the wave of his early success with valor as he smashed records and stood tall as the District 5-3A MVP. Notably, he posted a record of 2,435 yards and 18 touchdown passes with only four interceptions in his freshman season. He complemented his impressive passing stats with 146 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Remarkably, Morton continuously escalated his performance with every game and every passing season. He successfully repeated his MVP triumph in his following junior year where he impressively passed for 2,766 yards and 29 touchdowns. His senior year witnessed even more awe-inspiring performances as Morton set a record with 3,613 passing yards with 37 touchdowns against six interceptions. His notable contributions wasn’t limited to his passing prowess alone as he also demonstrated impressive rushing prowess with 893 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns. Such feats in his senior year sealed his third consecutive District 5-3A MVP win.
At the end of his impressive high school career, Morton was rated a four-star recruit. Testament to his immense talent, he received offers from top-ranked institutions such as Baylor, SMU, TCU, and Texas A&M. However, prioritizing his future and recognizing the opportunities that lay ahead, Morton committed to play college football at Texas Tech.
The beginning of his journey with Texas Tech saw him redshirt his first season, despite making appearances in two games. However, his redshirt freshman season portrayed a shift in roles as injuries hit the team’s starter, Tyler Shough, and Donovan Smith. Morton took up the mantle as Texas Tech’s starting quarterback in his stride. His first career start saw Morton complete 39 of 62 passing attempts accounting to 379 yards and two touchdowns, along with one interception.
His consistent performances continued to earn him recognition as he was named the team’s starting quarterback against West Virginia. Morton once again showcased his remarkable talent as he led the team to a resounding 48-10 victory, passing for 325 yards and scoring two touchdowns, thus earning the title of Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
Despite suffering the unfortunate setback of a sprained AC joint in his throwing shoulder, Morton made a triumphant return, leading his team to victory in the Independence Bowl against California, earning him the title of the game’s offensive MVP.
As a testament to his resilience, Morton bounced back from his shoulder injury in the subsequent 2024 season. After seeing multiple specialists, Morton rebuilt his form and strength. He returned to the field in full vigor, leading the Red Raiders with the determination and skill he was known for.
