Anthony Tyus's Biography
The year 2024 marked an important era for the Ohio Bobcats football team that represented Ohio University in the Mid-American Conference during the 2024 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The dedicated team was led by a commendable leader named Tim Albin. Being his fourth year as the head coach, Albin demonstrated impressive leadership skills that further significantly impacted the team positively. The Bobcats found their home in the Peden Stadium, located in Athens, Ohio where they played most of their home games.
As the team entered the season, they had an impressive record of a previous year which turned out to be the first time in school history that the Bobcats won 10 games in back to back years. However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. The team faced numerous losses in the transfer portal in the offseason which included 12 players transferring to programs in power conferences. The most substantial loss was that of their starting quarterback and 2022 MAC Player of the Year, Kurtis Rourke, who transferred to Indiana. As a result, Ohio entered the season ranked 133 out of 134 FBS teams in returning production as determined by the SP+ rankings. Nevertheless, the influx of incoming transfers and freshman recruits boosted the Bobcats. They now featured 58 players who were new to the roster from the prior season.
Among the returning players were noteworthy figures such as quarterback Parker Navarro and running back Ricky Hunt who played crucial roles in their victory by making their first start in the previous season’s bowl game. Navarro had 11 completions on 16 attempts for 120 yards and 71 rushing yards. Ricky Hunt’s record of 5 TD’s tied the record in bowl games and set an Ohio program record.
In the season opener at Syracuse, the Bobcats showed impressive potential with Anthony Tyus III’s gaining 203 yards. Unfortunately, their defense couldn’t stop the Syracuse passing game as Kyle McCord threw for 354 yards and four touchdowns. However, they bounced back in their home schedule, opening with a win over South Alabama where Parker Navarro showcased his skills by passing and rushing for a touchdown in a 27–20 victory.
Despite facing a loss in the 100th Battle of the Bricks against Miami’s defense, the Bobcats returned home the following week against Buffalo and displayed an unforgettable performance. Coleman Owen scored three touchdowns, Shay Taylor had a pick-six and Kadin Schmitz had a pick-two as Ohio cruised to a 47–16 win.
When the Mid-American Conference announced the pre-season coaches poll, Ohio was picked to finish fifth in the conference. They unfortunately did not receive any votes to win the MAC Championship. Despite this setback, the team didn’t let this impact their spirit.
They opened the season in the JMA Wireless Dome, Syracuse, NY against the Orange, who were coming off a 6–7 season. The game began with Ohio taking the opening kickoff and going on a 50-yard drive only to settle for a Gianni Spetic field goal. Overall, it was a tough game for both teams but the Bobcats lost with a score of 38–22.
Subsequent games included a tussle with South Alabama and Morgan State, both of which resulted in Ohio’s victories with 27–20 and 21–6 win respectively. The team showcased great potential and their zeal to overcome every obstacle was commendable. Though the Ohio Bobcats faced certain challenges, their resilience, talent, and perseverance reflected in their matches, proving their unwavering determination in the world of football. Their journey in the 2024 season was nothing less than a mountainous task, but they broke through with absolute grit and tenacity.
